rear hatch pull down won't work

I've got an '88 iroc and the rear hatch pull down dosen't work. The unit is stuck in the down position and won't latch on to the hatch. I have not been able to get the motor to engage either. Do you guys think this is a wiring problem or is the motor just shot?

When the striker-sensing switch starts to go bad it won't trip the unit to rise, which is what may be happening in your case. Reach inside and press and release the small black switch that is just in front of the latch as you face the pull-down motor. If that doesn't solve it, check your fuse. It is a 15 amp in the #3 location (top row, third column from the left). Next to check is that you have power at the red with white stripe wire. You'll have to remove the 4 screws holding on the hatch surround trim. Un-plug the blue wire from the red/white stripe wire and test it with a test light or multi-meter. If you need to go any further to repair or diagnose it, follow the Tech Article I wrote on repairing these pull-down motors that is on this site. If you find any parts broken or damaged replace them. I sell any parts you'll need to repair it.
