I dont have any pictures but ive done enough rust repair to tell you that it is so much easier to rent a chop saw and take it to the local junk yard and cut off the pieces you need instead of trying to fab pieces. Just cut the patch panel larger than you need and cut it to fit after you cut away the rust.
I have never used magnets but vice grips work wonders i also like to cut small strips of scrap sheet metal usually 1/2" x 4" or 5" and use self tapping screws to secure the piece in place so i can tack weld it that way i dont have to worry about bumping it or it moving because im a clumsy bastard.
You can get a decent little wire feed welder from Home Depot for a few hundred bucks just make sure it has a gas attachment, The gas makes for a much cleaner weld and well worth the extra money. I would stay away from a stick welder. They are cheap enough but unless you are a VERY experienced with stick welding you will end up with holes everywhere. I have been welding for a long time and still cant stick weld sheet metal without burning through.
