Privacy (windo) shade swap??
I just picked up an '88 IROC-Z which has no privacy shade and no holes for one in either the sides nor in the hatch rear section.
Meanwhile my '86 IROC-Z has the shade and I would like to transfer the shade from the '86 into the '88.
Is this a relatively simple operation or does it require the mounts to have been factory installed??

If you kind of pull back the side panels, you will see circles in the plastic where the shade clips go. I just drilled the holes the right size and made sure they went through the center of those circles. Then I put in the clips. I didn't mount them to the frame or anything and they work fine.
For the panel that is on the deck lid, i cut out two holes in the plastic for that shade to latch on to. If I knew how to weld, i would have made and welded brackets on but the plastic piece works ok, most of the time.

Firebat, thanks for the feedback.
It sure sounds "doable"; soon as this heat & humidity breaks I'll get onto this mod.
I like having things "out of sight" back there and it just looks cooler with the shade drawn.
Also, I'm gonna pull the overhead console from the '86 and mount into the '88. Since the '88 headliner is black it should blend nicely.

I was going to do this to mine also. I got the rear cargo trim with the holes already in them from the junkyard. The only thing is that behind the black mounts is a metal bracket welded to the body of the car. The black mounts screw into this bracket. I guess you could probably get away without the brackets, but it might not be as sturdy. I was just going to fabricate some up and rivet them in.

Hmmm, interesting. It sounds like there must be enough metal back there to drill into and pop rivet the home-made bracket support.
I'm getting anxious to pull the trim piece from the '86 so I can see that setup.
Since both interiors are tan, maybe I can even swap trim pieces.

With all the 3rd gens I have parted I should know this answer. I know I have read that you must have the mounts installed from the factory in order to make the privacy shade work properly, but I am sure a mod or 2 will make it work. I have parts and pieces if you all need any to make it work.

I took a look at mine, couldn't remember since installed the shade about 7 years ago. I dont have metal brackets, just holes in the plastic and the holes have notches in them for the pieces to fit in snug.
The window shade actually exerts enough pressure on the sides that it holds itself in place.

Gees you guys are getting my curiosity up now; I'll have to get the '86's battery charged so I can check out the details.

Re: Privacy (windo) shade swap??
My neighbor gave me a cargo shade he had stored when is daughter had a 3rd Generation Camaro.
This cargo shade is black vinyl while the one from the Pontiac is cloth,
Any reason for the difference ?

Re: Privacy (windo) shade swap??
Thanks Dave.
This tells me its a GM OEM original and not a after market replacement.
It was from a 85 Berlinetta I believe.
My other car, not posted is a 92 T Top V6 same color, rims and interior as the 91 convertible.
If you thought I was asking about the shade.

Re: Privacy (windo) shade swap??
My stepdad got one from a junk yard, cut off the supports at the junk yard and riveted them into my car where they should be as well as cut the trim pieces on my car, mine is also black vinyl. Fits like a charm
