very poorly made interior pieces

i know this is probably nothing new to you guys but the interior pieces in my 89 camaro RS i have found are very poorly made. cardboard door panels, carboard headliners, carboard sailpanels(speaker covers), cardboard visors, poorly fitting trim pieces, screws that thread into slots. the list goes on and on. the third gen Fbody is a fantasic car, i wouldnt trade mine for anything. but the fit and finish on some of the small items is horrible. did GM really intend for carboard to last long enough for the original owner to finish paying off the car even? much less last 20 years? do any of the late third gens have plastic trim pieces that i could use to replace my carboard crap? or do i have to go complete aftermarket. i replaced my door panels already, i got a set off of an IROC wreck. they are in much better shape than the ones that i had. but they are still carboard and i just dont like cardboard.

There are some ABS parts to be had such as headliner, sail panels and a few others from 91-92.

hmmm, the original cardboard in my bird and 6000 are all still in excellent shape. Just don't get them wet ex...leave windows open in rain. I can definetely see your point though.

I also know that Toyotas of the same era used some junk materials as well including cardboard, not just GM.

Same on my car. Now that the healiner fabric has fallen down, that flakey yellow crap flies everywhere when I have the T-tops off.

Same Old GM

My 69 Camaro had the original interior when I purchased it in 1987. The sail panels were vinyl-covered cardboard, the package tray under the rear glass was black cardboard, and the door panels were cardboard.

The original sail panels with original vinyl are still in the car. They were made the exact same way as the third gen sail panels - steel retaining clips pressed into cardboard. Reproduction pieces are junk.

My 64 Impala I bought in high school in 1979 also had its original interior. The sail panels were vinyl-covered cardboard, the package tray was blue cardboard, and the door panels were cardboard.

I helped my father-in-law restore his 57 Chevy in the early 90s. It had a mostly original interior. The sail panels were vinyl-covered cardboard, the package tray was black cardboard, and the door panels were cardboard.

Starting to see a pattern?

Two different 91 birds, cardboard doorpanels, plastic sail panels, and some kind of crap foam/cardboard hybrid headliner. Cardboard really works well though as long as it doesn't get wet.
