Yeah, to my knowledhge, thhe only sources of the VIN # are that stamped tag, the engine, the tranny, and stickers on the body.

I'm afraid to say...you might hafta provide them GM proof that there is NO OTHER stamps of the VIN anywhere else on a 3rd gen.

I'd also ask THEM to provide a law saying it has to be stamped elswhere, on a car that never had it from the factory.

Of course, you might have to go through the trouble of doing this the first time, then the next time around, you'll have the documents from this year, to show them, and avoid this hassle.

Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

My GTAs have one...a sticker. Like I said, I know of no other metal VINs other than the engine, tranny, and windshield tag.

Usually the VIn numberunder the windsheidl is not accepted as a legal forms of identification. That iswhy in most european countries the VIN is also stamped into the frame when the car is imported. This is done by a government funded organisation (at least here in the netherlands). The exact VIN location on the chassis is on your car papers!

So either your car is just imported from the usa, then you need the bill of sales and the title + the VIN under the windshield, and let the appropriate autoroties put the vin in the chassis.

Or the car is bought from a EU country, then it should have a vin on the chassis and the location is on your paperwork. A usual location is on the drivers side subframe, engine side. You may have to clean or sand the frame to notice it. If you do not have the paperwork you can probably ask for an identicication on the car, or provide it yourself: pretty much every model year can be identified by body/engine/transmission and interior style.

If all else fails just ask someone if they now someone who has the corrrect size numbers, so you can stamp the VIN on the chassis yourself.

Tell me, did you import the car from the USA, buy it in greece, or did you buy it somewhere in europe. That maybe usefull information!

Reading you post again, I think they are looking for the cowl tag, and not the extra VIN in the chassis which is obligated in parts of europe... I don't know it any thirdgens have a cowl tag like the 1960 and 1970 cars do. Anyone??

There must be an RPO (regualr production options) sheet somewhere in you glovebox. But this is just a sticker.

I believe early 82-84? thirdgens had a tag much like a cowl tag located on the radiator support. Take a look there, im not sure if a partial vin or the whole thin, or anything is there but take a look.

Are you referring to this? It's the only thing stamped under my hood anywhere, abd other than the fact I have a V8, the #s don't even come close to coincide with the build sequence # in my VIN. I do have (what's left) the sticker I was referring to, on the bottom of my hood. The first half is gone, but I can read the end, showing the build sequence #.

Nope thats not the one, Your car being an 87 I dont think itll have this tag. Ive only seen them on early cars. Look on your rad support, kinda near the middle, all cars have the indent for this tag but only the early ones actually had it. Ill see if i can find a pic.

I went and pulled my repair manual to find the vin locations, there are a few you can try
1. there may be a plate on the upper radiator support near the middle
2. there should be one on the just below the right side cylinder head next to the timing cover
3. there should also be one on the right side of your transmission towards the front and above the pan for automatic and about the same place on a manual

I hope this helps you and good luck with them

Nope. That was the only thing even REMOTELY close on my rad support It was just to the left of center, by the radiator car a passenger side headlight.

My 89 has one like the 87, but the #s are different, no where near the VIN # either, and the tag is centered on the rad wall.

well my car was imported from the states but not for sale.let me explain you...when here in greece in about 1980's we had the american base many american people work here.then when the american base closed...people leave for the states but they leave their cars here.so goverment took them and sell them on auctions.here in greece we have many american cars.now because people in EPA had no clue about american cars they told me about that vin number on the chassis.i think that the best thing for me to do to solve the problem is to stamped it my self.

Hi.
On my 82 camaro there is another stamped VIN under the right front fender.
It is located on the main spar that ties the front end together about even with the shock tower. I do not beleve it is the entire vin but the last six
digits of the vin. Hope this helps.

there is a stamped vin... well just the serial number. (last 6 or so numbers of the vin) on the fire wall of the engine bay. its the only one that i have seen on the car and i have stripped the thing totaly. if you need a pic of its exact location i can get it for you.

you can also find a sticker vin in both doors/ under the hood/ under the rear hatch/ inside both front fenders/inside both rear 1/4 panels/back side of the nose/ and one in the glove box.

I admire your work so far. I wish I had the time and space to completely strip mine. It is always the best way to go that extra mile.

the vin is stamped on a plate that is rivetted to the frame of the car. the dash stops before it get there. the only way to realy get to it is to remove the glass.

Re: THIRD GEN VIN NUMBER...

On a 91 RS they are under the tire well on frame. They have at least 5 on every car.
Call a dealership, they will tell you where to find them. I came across a internet site once that told where they were all stamped. Just can't remember.

Re: THIRD GEN VIN NUMBER...

"theft deterrent" labels- doors, front and rear fenders, hood, compartment lift window panel, front and rear impact bars, and the door windows.

"VIN" attached to the upper left of the instrument panel and can be seen from outside the vehicle.

A derivative of the VIN appears on the engine and transmission.

The plate that I am reffering to appears to have no connection to the VIN. My question is what is this plate for?

Re: THIRD GEN VIN NUMBER...

In post #16 and #28 the tag slightly towards driver side on center of core support. The older models the tag contains some trim options-?, at some point (85-?)they are changed to a six digit number. Through some research the six letter tag coresponds to the same number that is on the build sheet. I would imagine that it was a way to keep the build sheet and the car together at the factory. It would seem more logical to just track the build sheet by vin. The numbers have some meaning, I want to know what the numbers mean.

Since this post 10 years ago, these images seem to have disappeared. I'm wondering, can anyone repost them?

The context was the last 6 of the VIN being stamped on the firewall.

Much appreciated!
