Aluminum rear bumper?
Did they actually make these or not? For camaros. I cant find any solid info on them. As well as the car i got my alum front bumper had a steel rear bumper. Ive seen pictures of the fronts but never of the rears. If i cant find one im thinking about removing the stock one and cutting off the corners so its square with the frame and also getting rid of the egg crate. Reason im not adding it to the front is I already have a cracked repaired front bumper and if i ever get in another fender bender ill replace the bumper as well i would with the rear. That stuff is easily worth 3-5 pounds. Every little bit counts
Car is a street car too so i dont want to remove them completely.
Here is the alum front bumper i got on tonight.

Glad i got it in, let me get a chance to fix and paint other stuff. Undercoated and painted a lot of small stuff. Tommaro the factory manifolds as well as the rest of the exhaust is coming off. Going to try to re-align my fenders better tommaro.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
Only early, early 3rd gens, AFAIK.
I've got one off a 84Z28. The very corner is slightly bent, but fixable. I just never put the effort into straightening it out.
I don't know of any later years, aluminum ones being made. You could always do what a buddy of mine did...He took out the front bumper support, and built an aluminum tubular brace. Shaved some weight, but has no crash protection now. Of course, it's not much of a street car anyways now. Mainly autocross.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
I wonder if you can order these from GM? Probably lots of $$, but I wonder if they still make/stock them? What year/model for the front aluminum bumper? I'm more interested in the front end wieght. I can't get enough over the rear. The lighter the front the better, for me.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
From what I understand, '84 was the last year for the aluminum ones.
One of these days I should get rid of mine. It has been collecting dust for about 6 years now, behind my shed, on some saw horses.
I never thought to check a magnet of the rear bumper metal. 99.999% likely steel anyways. I've never even heard of an aluminum rear.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
because of this thread, yesterday I was trying to match up the firebird aluminum one I have onto my parts camaro. Looks like if I redo the plastic crumple material, it might work.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
I took these pics of the brackets that I have on hand...You can see the bend is at the very end, and very slight. Being aluminum, I'm sure straightening it would be a breeze.
I found the pics of the main support. The ben is so slight, you can barely make it out, in the first pic.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
Did 'birds ever have aluminum ones though? If it was 9 lbs lighter than the other one posted, it sounds like it is aluminum.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
Its about a 10-15 pound savings switching from the steel to aluminum. Little more if you leave the eggcrate off like i did. Closer to 15lbs. Worth it if you have one and are willing to take the front bumper cover off.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
The one I have was on a 84 Z that was totaled, by sliding sideways off a curve...into a deep ditch.
I should be able to get to it this week, maybe Sat.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
So what is everyone thinking 85 an earlier camaros have aluminum front and rear bumpers?
I am going to be stripping my car down soon for paint, she's a 86 Iroc, I would love to know what I have and if they are steel, what years should I be looking for these stocks aluminum ones?

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
I believe it is '85 & earlier, not positive.
Use a magnet on your '86, and let us know.

Re: Aluminum rear bumper?
I can get them all day long here at the junkyard. They charged me 35 for the front firebird one I have, guessing would be same for camaro rear. Shipping would rape you though... Unless you live around a grayhound bus station and dont mind going and picking it up.
I am having to take the one off my parts car and put on my new one because it was a northern car and rusted to hell as well.

I'm thinking about trying to fit this bird one onto my camaro since I have to replace the nose anyway.
