tar removal on GFX/ wheelwells???
the previous owner of my car had a heavy foot, as a result theres about 1/8 of an inch of tar/rubber on the rear GFX and all around the wheel. im starting to sand/paint and its a real PITA sanding layer after layer off. Does anyone have suggestions on a spray to get it off or a method of removal? ive tried the old faithful carb cleaner and a heat gun but i feel the gfx will melt before the tar and the carb cleaner didnt really do much either... any help is great

there was thread on here a couple days ago, and aparentlly WD-40 is AMAZING. Just spray it on, let it soak, and it pretty much wipes off. But if your talking actuall in the wheel well, thats a bit tougher. Youll pretty much have to scrape.

Sounds like quite a build up. You might need to resort to some scrapping no matter what product you use. I use spay-able goo gone, elbow grease, non metalic scapers and lots of old rags.

I'd vote WD40 also. Great as a solvent and won't damage paint as acetone will.

well if youre not worried about the paint, get some deisel gas, or paint stripper, or some nasty chemical like that, and let it dissolve it away. A wire brush also works, but u gotta put in some elbow grease.

Stick with WD40, kerosene or even gasoline. Acetone, laquer thinner and the like will at least soften if not ruin your paint, and will soak in and cause solvent pop on the new paint job.

I don't recommend gasoline as a solvent. Also it goes without saying that you'll want to do this in a well ventillated area. You don't want the fire department to have to finish the job for you because the project got a little hotter than anticipated.

I wouldn’t recommend it, just like you shouldn’t wash down parts in it, but it does work, you probably have it around, and to be honest, as long as you’re not smoking at the time it won’t cause a problem. Lets face it, whatever you’re using you’re going to soak into a rag and wipe around, and EVERYTHING that will really cut the tar well is extremely flammable when soaked into something.
