Difference between Lexan and Glass tops

Hello Everyone,
Have a question. I have an 89 formula 350 with Factory Lexan T-Tops. I have been looking for a nice set of Glass T-tops. What I have noticed is that my Lexan tops have the big, fat black plastic pins (like 1/2 in diameter). All of the Glass tops I have looked at have the smaller 3/8" diameter pins that go into the body. So, the question is, did only the LEXAN tops come with the 1/2" diameter pins and not the glass tops? If so, that would stink since I don't want to change out my carrier slots in the body to mate with the smaller, 3/8" pins.

Hope the above makes sense. If the above is true, I guess I should stop chasing glass tops.

Thank you as always

Re: Difference between Lexan and Glass tops

There are glass t-tops with the big pin but they're hard to find, especially in good shape. I've been hunting for a set of glass ones too that aren't highway robbery, yeah glass is heavier but after all these years the lexan ones look like *** and they warp too (my driver side top whistles when the wind blows hard or if I'm above about 65mph).

I've heard the small pin t-tops will work on the big pin cars but I'm not sure. I found out through a dealership that the big pin tops are called self centering t-tops. They actually have the small pin and then a plastic surround that makes them big pin and that is spring loaded and keeps the top centered, which is probably why they don't leak so I'm not going to take the chance.

compuwiz1937 I have the exact same problem with the warping and air whistle. I couldnt find the air whistle problem (mine is over 50 mph you hear it). Drove me nuts! Took it to a body shop and they showed me how my passenger top was slightly warped.

I will keep searching. thanks for confirming they exist

I didn't know they used different pin sizes - There, I learned something new today. My '89 TTA has the lexan tops, but thankfully in perfect shape. But with 1,210 miles on the ticker and having spent its life inside, I should hope so. Good luck on your search!

The two versions of t-tops (large plastic shrouded pin vs. smaller pin) are interchangeable. They conical nose of the large plastic pin centers and seats into the conical receiver on the latch and is spring-loaded. The plastic portion stops and the inner metal pin continues into the receiver.

Re: Difference between Lexan and Glass tops

I have used glass and lexan. Car originally had glass. never had a leak or whistle with them. Then one day one flew off at 50 mph...Used a different glass set, whistled and leaked. Used different lexan set, only leaked 10% of the time. Bottom line is they both can whistle and leak, and our cars have no real frame to fight against twisting.
