Question about ttops
My sister has a '91, and she bought ttops off ebay and the auction said they fit '82-'91 (I think they forgot they made 3rd gens in '92 but that doesn't matter). But anyways, she got the ttops today and they won't fit. Are pre '87 or '86 or something different than the newer years? THey fit on the car without latching, but they won't latch into place.
Re: Question about ttops
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the only difference between those years is the size of the pins that latch the top. If that's the case, you'd need to get the plastic trim pieces that have the right size hole.

Re: Question about ttops
I wonder if it's possible to swap out the pins from her old ttops, because the ones she bought don't have locks and her old ones do. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Re: Question about ttops
82-84 I believe have latches, 85-89 have small pins, and 90-92 have big pins. The big pins are supposedly self-centering because if you push on the outside of the pin you'll see that it's spring loaded.
Re: Question about ttops
Anything is possible, it had to go together somehow. AS per it being easily possible...that's another story...I think the best solution would be to jsut replace the plastic pin receptacles.

Re: Question about ttops
those plastic pieces have adjustment screws. you will probably need to move the holes around to line up with the pins. when i put new weatherstripping on my car i had to adjust the pin receptacles and i kept the same tops.

Re: Question about ttops
When I changed my ttops form acrylic to glass (the weigh more but look way better) I had to take off the plastic panels where the ttop joins to the body, and move down the mounts on the body of the car that they latch into (1/4 inch hex I think). That was for ttops of the same year. As a reference mine is a '91 RS with big pins.

Re: Question about ttops
this doesnt seem right to me...
one of my ttops had flown off and broke. (owner before me...)
he replaced it with a new top that turned out to be an older one. now i have one glass and one lexan top. both fit perfect.

Re: Question about ttops
I think the variation in dimension occurs where the clear part is glued to the mount. There seems to be some difference there across my 2 sets. Also, that is where mine were leaking even though the last owner was sure it was the seals. against the car. Even if those seals do leak a little, it should drain out, not end up in the car.
