Any Tail Light Rattle Fixes??

Ok, ever since I added a sound system to my car, I noticed.....the ONLY thing on my car that rattles from the bass are my tail lights, and it's REALLY bad..

What can I do to fix this?

I already took the tail lights out to replace a light in them, and the only thing i can think of that would actually help to stop them rattling is putting some kind of foam around the edges...maybe behind where they connect to one another, or maybe around the tops of them where they meet the car?

I just want to be able to listen to my system outside of my car without listening to really loud rattles.

Any ideas?

you sure it isnt the licence plate against the frame?
when i had huge speakers, i put a thin layer of foam weatherstrip all along the backside of the tag to keep it from rattling.
on the otherhand, if it is the taillights, you can always try to tighten up the taillight nuts a bit in the hatch.
dont go to much, they like to break.

When I was outside the car listening to everything rattle, I put both hands against the liscence plate, and it made no difference in sound...because it wasnt rattling.

I then did the same to the headlights, and man did it get quiet, I've already tightened down all the wing nuts the lights are held in by, it made no difference still.....

Huh, I tightened my lights to hell and they stoped rattling. Now, the lights do come with a bit of foam around every stud that goes through the wall. I would make sure that they are present. If that doesn't stop it I would pad them with some stick on weather stripping. Cheap and easy, plus it wont be seen from outside. I guess my system did not hit hard enough to rattle the tail lights, although I tightened them to hell.

Re: Any Tail Light Rattle Fixes??

First.. I'd try taking the tail lights completely out and shaking them around a bit and see if there's not something broken.. also inspect them closely for a hairline crack. That may be what's making the noise. If everything seems good.. check the back panel with the tails off and music up. Put your hand on it to see how bad it vibrates.

If it's real bad I would dampen the back panel that the tails are mounted to.

I'd put some Damplifier on the inside of the metal panel 2 layers, and then a layer of rattle pad over that if the inner plastic panel vibrates. On the outside where the tails mount I'd put down some Spectrum Spray ( it can be painted on with a brush ) and a layer of closed cell foam(-Overkill or Overkill Pro) on top of that. The closed cell foam can be used in areas that will get damp since it won't hold water. This will help insulate the tails from the panel.

A lot of work, but it should help with the vibrations that panel is transmitting to the tails. I used this stuff in the trunk of my car ( daily driver Maxima ) and it really works very well. I have virtually no rattles and I noticed a road noise decrease from just doing the trunk and under the rear seat.
