Rust in spots, how to fix it?
I have a few rust spots on the 84 z28 that I just bought and I'm hoping I can get some in site on how to go about fixing it. Most of the rust is on the edge of parts like the hood, hatch, fenders, and just in areas where the paint was chipping. Will I be able to fix these spots by sanding and fiberglass/bondo? Or does it have to be welded? I wish I could get pics but the car is not with me this week. If anyone knows any good websites that give step by step instructions on fixing it i'd be real thankful!!

If it's on the edge of panels like a hood, fender or door, a little sanding should do the trick.
If it's pitted to the point of having to level it with anything, I would pickup a small hand held sandblaster and some "Black Beauty" and hit the rust first, then use some "Tiger Hair" or other fiberglass reinforced filler and then finish it off with regular filler.
Some may even recommend using a rust inhibiting Epoxy primer after sandblasting and feathering it out, which would probably be optimal; but maybe out of your budget - but it's your call.

Check out the POR 15 web site. They have many products that work well if used according to the directions. Expensive but worth it. You can buy as much or as little as you want.

Thanks guys, I heard about the POR-15 stuff, but don't you still have to fix the rust first? I've never had to sand a car or do much to this sort, so I could use all the help I can get.

Re: Rust in spots, how to fix it?
Thought i would chime in and let you know how i was going about things. I'm doing everything by hand to my car, Completely, The only thing i myself am not doing is shooting the final paint and clear. However i will shoot my own primer, body work, electrical, mechanical. Everything.
Now when i got my car it looked ok... Not pretty but ok. I don't have access to a large compressor, sand blaster, nothing really. When i started stripping the paint i found rust. Mostly surface rust that hadn't started to bubble the paint yet, Rust with bondo over top of it, and i also found the cancer rust. For all but the cancer what i ended up doing was i went to home depot. Went to the air tool section. Looked for the sanding discs for i believe angel grinders. I also picked up a wire wheel to. I don't have an angel grinder.. However. I do have a 3/8 drill. So ive been using them. It takes time but takes less time then sand paper and a sanding block. I also don't have a power sander so I'm SOL there to. Then once i get the rust off. i begin body work. I've been taking duplicolor high build primer, shoot a coat of that. Then sand it and in my low places add filer, sand, primer, repeat as nessecary. So far its been going good for me. Ive saved both fenders which i was told they were "Goners" because of the rust. But it was only surface and not that deep. My hood is fixed, and also doors. This was a long drawn out post but maybe it will help, Maybe not. Thats just how i found to do it.
