Hatched up

I have a 91 camaro that the rear hatch pulldown is broke. Is this a 91-92 only thing as the bolt pattern is different than other years? I really dont care if its manual or not I just need it to work. Thanks

OK, so do they even make a manual one or do they only make a power one? They are a little pricey and Im not interested in the bling factor.

they are all power. I think only the early models like pre 86 or something were manual.

Re: Hatched up

You can swap to the 82-85 Manual ones,,,, But you will need to drill out the spot welds on the power pull down bracket, and replace the bracket with a 82-85 Manual one.

I have done it on my Formula, and my buddy has done 2 (88 Firebird & 86 Trans Am) It really isn't that hard, but then again I had another buddy who welds, that welded in the manual bracket for me. All in All it took 15-20 Minutes for that.

Then after the manual bracket is welded in, take the manual latch and loosley bolt it in place, have a buddy close the hatch so you can adjust the height on the latch, then bolt it down tight.

I am much happier with my manual latch, and do not have to worry about it failing like the power pull down

Re: Hatched up

Thanks man, Im more interested in weight savings as well. Its going to be a drag car and my hatch pulldown motor is junk. I did think about welding it into postion as well, since the motor is junk. I have a 85 so that will work!! Thanks

Re: Hatched up

One more thought, you can drill holes instead of welding and use bolts to keep it in place. That way you might have a little more play with adjustment and what not. Then you can dump the motor part and what not. I saw one in the junkyard liek this, but I forgot to grab it and someone else took it.....

Remember he has a 1991-92 style pull-down (regognized by the tan colored plastic frame). Your suggestions of welding or screwing a 1982-85 manual mount to the latch area of the pull-down unit are valid ONLY for a 1986-90 (early 91) style pull-down motor. He's stuck with swapping in another 1991-92 pull-down unit. Another alternative is to cut the mount from the body of an earlier car (1982-85) and weld it in place of his 1991-92 mount. He'd also have to swap out the hatch hook, but that is simply a matter of un-bolting the old and bolting in the older (1982-90) style hatch hook. The only good news is that I've noticed these 1991-92 pull-down units are showing up more frequently lately at the pick-a-part yards.

Re: Hatched up

Ive been told by autozone that they can get them for 114.00...it still weighs to much I have a 85 z28 so it looks as though I will have to replace the pull-down...which Im told they made several....or to remove the one from the 85 and put it in the 91...I have already changed the latch as the rear deck was damaged. Thanks Lon and MN!!
