Flat black Urethane splotchy !!!

This was my first paint job (rookie garage painter). It was a Urethane and medium hardner ( 4:1 ) flat black. It came out VERY uneven with stroke lines and some areas flater than others. I useds a $100 hvlp gun i got at carquest (1.4 tip)(6cfm required 10psi) my compressor SAYS 6.5cfm@40psi but it ran ALOT while i was painting...Im not looking for, or expecting a near professional job, just nice even old school Hot Rod flat black thats not primer, but I've had better results from a rattle can...
Given the above info, any guidence or suggestion for the re-paint would be GREATLY appreciated.
Ps The tech sheet said it could be reduced with the supplied reducer but i chose not to use it.

Re: Flat black Urethane splotchy !!!

Yea i had the same problem when some guy rubbed in a parking lot. I didnt use primer but primer does make the paint stick better. I used a rattle can that was a perfect match to my car, i painted too close and it ran like ****. so i had to sand it back down again and paint further away and had to paint over the same area 2-3 times over because i was further back, but it came out even and clean. So i would suggest try doing what i did and make sure ur spraying fairly quickly not holding the spray gun in the same area for too long.

Re: Flat black Urethane splotchy !!!

Technique. You want 50% overlap and consistent gun speed and distance. That will take practice.
