Question about T-Tops

I tried a search, but can't find an answer to my question, so here goes. I have a 1992 RS that I am restoring, and the Lexan t-tops are in pretty nasty shape. Rusted around the edges, spider-webbed, and lots of small cracks. T-tops are pretty much a dime a dozen on eBay, at junkyards, etc... I know all years will physically fit, except the locking mechanism. My questions is can older style tops be made to work with my 92?
I appreciate any help
Thanks
Dave

I think the older ones have the latch to lock it in place while the newer ones have the pin style so if you get the right style I think it will fit but I am not 100% sure.

Re: Question about T-Tops

From what I understand you have to have the ones from 91-92, because the latches are different

Re: Question about T-Tops

I believe the difference in pin-style was the large pin and small pin, and I believe large pin is just a rubber sleeve over the small pin. I dunno. I'm about to restore (partially) my T's, and I currently have two sets sitting next to me and one set stuck on the car.

Re: Question about T-Tops

Yours will be the larger pin style like mine. If you have to use one with a small pin or latch, you'll also need to replace the mechanism on the pillars as well. Altough it's just easier to find the larger pin style. I HAVE used the smaller pin style in a larger pin mechanism. It worked for me just fine, no leaks, etc. So... But you're better off with matching parts.

Your right - it's just a (plastic) sleeve over the small pin.

the older ones have the latch to lock it in place while the newer ones have the pin style
If I'm not mistaken the "hook" or "latch" style was used only in the 82-83 cars. After that the small pin was used until sometime around 90. That first "hook" desigin seems to be the rarest of them all. ( Besideds the C&C set-up used through all the years. !)

you'll also need to replace the mechanism on the pillars as well
Not really........ When I bought a set of Lexan T-Tops I also bought the matching pin retainers at both sides of the pillars from the same car. When I was about to swap them I found they were exactly the same. I pulled the glass tops off my 84 and put the LEXAN set on - DONE !

You can use ANY "PIN" style T-Top on any F-body..... Big or small pin. I just sold a set of 84 glass tops to a guy so he could replace his Lexan set on his 92 - no problems. There are differences like the outer chanel on the LEXAN compared to the smooth edged glass and so on, but they will work without changing anything else on the car.

* This excludes the Cars and Concepts aftermarket T-Tops !!!

Re: Question about T-Tops

Wow. Thanks for the great information. Let me make sure I got this right. I can use any of the pin style tops on my 92... provided I retrieve the appropriate pillar parts, or find a way to put that plastic sleeve from my tops on the other set? Sounds basic enough.

That sounds about right I have the hook style in my 83.
