Re: shaved antenna yay or nay
I shaved mine off when I did my doors. I put the antenna in the fender with a peice of rubber vaccum hose around the top to keep it from rattling to much. The reception isn't to bad in fm but am doesn't come in at all. There was a thread not to long ago about someone trying to make their rear defrost act as an antenna it seemed like it was going to work but I never got to see if he finished it or not.

That does look good. I might just have to do that I guess you could run a XM radio with a low profile antenna.Like I do now.
I wonder when some one will come here and call that a "hack job"

I consider XM mandatory myself. If sat. there are many options. My radio store has a lot of antennas including one that goes through the glass. One guy in our pontiac club painted his to match the car color on a 68 tempest and it looks good IHMO.

no antenna is the way to go I wanted to shave mine, when I got it painted, but I forgot to tell him about
so it's to late now lol, but I got one of the 8 inch ones, and it looks really good a lot better than the super tall stock one

When I shaved mine all I did was shove the stock one down and into the hole off to the side, welded over and walla.
I did nothing else and pick up everything though I do only use Pioneer decks which have super tuner.

Re: shaved antenna yay or nay
If your in the market for a new windshield ask your auto glass guy for a windshield with an anntena, they make them. 2nd gen f-bodies didnt have antennas at all (that I can think of!) and they had good reception with crappy tuners. With technology nowadays who needs radio when you have an ipod that will play any song you want to hear when you want to hear it. R.I.P. radio, we wont miss ya!

Re: shaved antenna yay or nay
I'm going to shave the antenna on my car as well. Eventually at least. With satellite radio and all the media options we have with modern stereos there is no reason to have an ugly external antenna anymore.
Never. I did it as a kid sometimes but I've never done this in the last 15 years or more.

Re: shaved antenna yay or nay
yay for the project. mine is actually broken off, so i'll finish shaving it when i paint my car. because i have a lack of any sort of wiring or electrical ability, my dad is gonna run my rear defroster as my antenna and then just run a capacitor on it so i dont blow up my stereo. it'll be an antenna and retain it functionality of a defroster

I hate you guys, I might have to take off my fender and fiberglass it before I paint it.

Did something like that in another vehicle I had, always could pick up a radio station no problem. I just stuffed the stock antenna up under the dash best I could through a glovebox opening lol.

Re: shaved antenna yay or nay
My 82 Z28 had the radio antenna (power) mounted on the drivers side right before the rear spoiler. No hole in the original factory front fender(s). I assume they did this because the SMC hood is not a ground plane (required for a proper monopole).
The rear hole was rusted out so I "shaved" it (really just welded in a patch and filled it). The replacement front fender I have had a hole, did the same here....
I will try one of the windshield mount antennas once I am done the body (although a buddy suggested that I use the rear defroster--it is a summer car only--as an antenna, as an RF engineer this is far from ideal BUT it might work ok, at lesat as well as a monopole mounted with no ground plane).
As an interesting side note, there is a hole in the windshield frame base (cowl) with a plug in it for a windshield with an integrated antenna. I tried to get a replacement windshield with an integrated antenna, could not find one. I have also never seen a third gen with such a windshield. The hole is likely one of the many things on my 82 that were part of the design and never used (there are mounting points etc. all over the car for parts that were never on any NA third gen that GM put in place either for overseas markets or they had an idea to add such parts in the future but never did).

My 82 Z28 had the factory non power antenna in the passenger front fender with the SMC hood. Worked fine for the short time I had a stereo in the car.

Now I only listen to CDs & will be swapping my deck out for one with a USB port. An internal "hard drive" for MP3s would be even better, but not nearly as cheap.

Re: shaved antenna yay or nay
i'm picking up a new fender tomorrow, and have access to welding equipment.
what would you suggest I use to make the patch to go in the hole? use a hole saw in an existing fender?
