missing vin

Hi all, just bought an '84 Z28, and through a bit of researching it led me to this site. This place is an excellent resource for information as ive already learned tons, so i was hoping you could help me with a problem i've recently discovered. As i was cleaning out my new prize and going over it seeing what needs to be done for work, I noticed the dashboard VIN was missing. This sent me into a panic thinking i had just recevied a stolen car, but i carfaxed it and it came back clean. the vin is still on the doors, glove box and old inspection sticker which is 2006, as well as the RPO code sheet and title, and it all matches. My question was if its not hiding under the windsheild(looks a bit rusted) is it possible to get a new VIN for the dash or am i screwed and am i gonna have to part out the car to get my money back? Thanks in advance

Re: missing vin

You should be able to go to the court house for a new vin. and they could try to get one. And then you could put one in i believe. here is a huge problem that till this day i still dont have my new VIN# but read this and it might help.

Re: missing vin

From one old man to another, does the dash pad look like it has been replaced? You may want to jump on this and find out what you need to do as long as you have all the other vins on the car. Drive the car to your local DMV and take everything you have with the vin # on it. If needed, someone from the DMV can always come out and see where the other vin numbers are on your car. Sometimes things like this have a way of coming back to bite you on the *** which is why I advise to take care of it now instead of letting it slide. It sounds to me like you don`t have anything to worry about, just the hassle of an extra trip to DMV.

Re: missing vin

I would think that a run in with the police would be a bigger problem than at DMV. At least what I'm used to the DMV never looks at my vehicle when the tag is up for renewal. However if the police ever pulled you over and looked for the VIN in the usual place, that may be a hairy situation to try and explain. LOL!!

Re: missing vin

thanks for all the help so far. I cant really drive it down to the dmv, seeing as how its a project car right now and not in the best road worth condition. I may however take a ride down there just to ask them the question. Also i deal with alot of state police troopers in my line of work so im waiting to ask one of them.
