spoiler conversion and paint questions.
i have a 1988 iroc with the factory spoiler/ brake light combo and was wondering how hard it would be to convert to the 1991 style high-rise spoiler. i know the brake light will be an issue but not sure how much. I have to get the car painted next summer and while it is parked for the winter i will be doing all the body work. this is not going to be a show car so i will probibly be taking it to a maaco for their polyurethane paint job, unless i can find someone in the area to do it for a reasonable price. Is the polyurethane paint wet-sandable? would a body shop do a polyurethane paint job for about the same price as maaco? any information would be helpfull but i dont want to hear that maaco sucks unless you have an explenation. thank you all in advance

you will have to drill new holes in the decklid unless you get the 91-92 lid.You will also have to fill the holes left on the lid if you use yours. And the holes from the 2 side spoilers have to be filled.

Just a little advice if you use the 91-92 spoiler get the holes welded up. I used bondo on mine after a couple months the holse started showing the cracks where I used the bondo.

i figured there would be holes to fill...its a camaro...there are always holes to fill. what about the brake light? would i need to wire somthing or would the wires all just fall in to place?
Re: spoiler conversion and paint questions.
The light is pretty easy, just go to the junk yard and look for the connector/contact thing that mounts to the hatch, and the piece that mounts to the interior plastic panel.
When you remove the piece that attaches to the hatch, look at how it's mounted. You'll find that on your hatch, the area is there for it to attach too. The on the piece that connects to the plastic, just tap into your brake light wires, and your done.
I did this on my 84, and was so suprised to see the area on the hatch already there, to attach the connector thingy. It took longer to cut the hole in the plastics, then it did to attach it.

so the brake light will not be an issue. that is good to hear. what about wet sanding the polyurethane paint. i am going to assume that there will be some inperfections in the paint but can they just be wetsanded out like on a base coat clear coat system?

Re: spoiler conversion and paint questions.
Maaco mixes their clear coat into the paint so be careful wetsanding. It can leave a scratched looking finish. I would suggest that you save for a real paint job. I have done both and if your goal is long term then Maaco is not the route to go. My paint job at Maaco lasted 6 year but only looked good for 4 years. And this was from a good Maaco.

i have read that maaco does good paint if your prep it yourself. i plan on taking all the paint down to factory primer and doing all the body work myself. i still have to do more research but that seems to be a safe way to go.
