Primer Suggestions

Hey guys

So ive had this ws6 style hood for awhile now and im getting a little tired of it being white... now i plan on having the entire car painted but its gonna beawhile cuz ive come into some hard times and school just started so i have no time to work.

Im thinking of primering it for the time being but i dont know anything about body work...NOTHING! So is there anything special i need to know to do this? Any brand you guys would suggest,do i use the rattle can kind or the spray guns. And lastly what color should i do it do u think red or black...i wanna do red but it would look kinda crappy because i dont think i can even come close to matching the reds darkness.....red primers very light colored am i corect?

thanks

Re: Primer Suggestions

from what i understand primer has no resistance to weather. if it is going to be a while before it is painted i dont know if it would even be worth primering if it is going to be out in the weather at all. i could be wrong and if i am. i would say the color doesnt really matter. black, gray, or red primer, no matter what you do it wont match.

Re: Primer Suggestions

got a friend who primed his 4X4, left it gray primer for 2 years off daily driving, mudding, and alabama sun, he could wash the truck with a green scrubby (kind for pots and pans)......he put his paint on it a few months ago without a reprime and it looks great

Re: Primer Suggestions

Primer will alow moisture in if its on metal and will eventualy cause it to rust. Since it is a fiberglass hood this will not be an issue. I would say ruff it with at least 600 grit to prep it. Dupla color sales a single stage primer that is ready to poor into the gun and spray, no mixing required. It will be better than anything in a rattle can. By the way, some of the badest cars of the 60's/70's came with flat black hoods

Re: Primer Suggestions

Go to NAPA. They have quite a few choices for paint and primer and you can even get only a quart. I would recommend a single stage urethane filler primer. However you will need a spray gun to apply a decent primer. In my opinion don’t mess with it until you are ready to paint....even though red is expensive.

Re: Primer Suggestions

Napa sells the Martin Senour Crossfire paints which are very good. Do not bother with the Duplicolor for spray guns. It's still crap lacquer. Nothing that comes out of a rattle can is worth using.

What state are you located in? I could spray color on that, single stage, cheap, using a gun, if you were close by.

They also carry the TP series primer/sealer that can be mixed in nearly any non-metalic color. It is great for filling small imperfections and it retains a good amount of gloss, even after it's fully dried.

Re: Primer Suggestions

Use a scuffing pad lightly and evenly. Do a base primer (sandable primer) in whatever color. Then use a primer sealer over that. This will net you the longest lasting and best 'wait to paint' surface IMO

Re: Primer Suggestions

I primed my neon with spray can primer from Wal-Mart. And painted it with 15yr old ppg paint (freebe) and it turned out okay. It wasn't super glossy or anything. But I would say if your going to be driving the car for a while use a primer/sealer vs just a regular primer. And try to get someone who knows what there doing to help. You could make a big mess if you have no clue what you are doing.

Re: Primer Suggestions

Re: Primer Suggestions

If you're just going to rattle can it, I dont' think there are too many good tips to be given. I would sooner leave it as it is than spray $4 cans of primer all over it, and then have to strip that paint later on. You do not want to spray real auto body urethane over lacquer primer, if you can help it (especially over weathered lacquer primer).

You can probably find a body shop like Maaco that will paint the hood the color of your car for like $150. It will be money well spent to not have a rattle canned, tiger striped hood that looks like crap.

Like I said, I'd spray it if I were closer. I hate to see someone crap up a good hood with spray paint.

Re: Primer Suggestions

I think what everyone is trying to say there is no cheap fix. But then again you can get a DeVilbiss FinishLine spary gun for $139-159, a quart of single stage urethane primer for $20 and a quart of single stage red with activator and reducer for $80? and lets add another $20 for sand paper and tape. So for under $300 you can put a decent paint job on that hood. And if you screw it up just block sand and shoot it again; you’ll have enough paint. There is no better way to learn than to just go and do it.

agreed....but even that is steep price wise for me....so im gonna way my pros and cons and do some research and still probably wont be able to make a desicion

and the reason i dont wanna paint the hood is because if i do that i might as well do the whole car because the paints 21 years old.

Re: Primer Suggestions

Just leave it...its better that the car look good with the red paint and white hood than shitty primer. I see primer cars all the time and they all look like ****...it sprays uneven, washes off little by little with rain and what not...scratches easily. Just leave it until you can afford your paintjob. The fiberglass wont be hurt and neither will your paint.

There are several good one's...the best in my opinion, being Imron. Hard to find because of it's toxicity and it's banned in most states. PPG Delstar is another good one. Paint is expensive and you pretty much get what you pay for as far as quality goes.

Re: Primer Suggestions

Yes. I have used Napa Crossfire, made by Martin Senour. National VOC 5.0 Urethane enamel. It is around $170 total out the door, including a gallon of paint, a gallon of reducer, and appropriate amount of hardener. As far as paint goes, that is pretty cheap for 1.5 gallons sprayable (once it's reduced).

However, single stage is much harder to sand runs out of than clear coat. The pigment in single stage settles through the thickness of the paint. If you cause a big run in single stage, and then you cut and buff it, the shadow of the run may very likely still be visible, due to color shift. I would not recommend a beginner spray single stage. base/clear is much more forgiving. Base is easy to spray, and clear can be sanded and buffed if it does not spray perfectly smooth.

Re: Primer Suggestions

Hey:
I am a few days late in reading your post but if you are not gong to paint the hood right away use a epoxy primer like PPG DP primers as they are water proof and they will seal the hood. I used this on my blazer and drove it all winter in Canada with no problems of rust coming back thru. In fact the
body shop I went to to try to get this painted told me this. Up here in Canada 50- 100 dollars will get you enough to do the hood and you wont have to worry about it. The primer will slightly flatten with time but a quick sand with 600 will have it ready for paint when you are. Hope this helps.

Re: Primer Suggestions

It doesn't look GOOD white, but it is going to look as bad or worse any other color than a perfect match to the red.

PS: Epoxy primer is expensive. Sherwin williams and NAPA only sell it by the gallon (whereas the sell 2k and paint by the quart and gallon). A gallon of epoxy plus a gallon of reducer and a pint of hardener ran around $130.

Re: Primer Suggestions

i agree with 86firebird. go with the do it right or not at all idea. perfect match, re-paint the whole car, or nothing at all. the money you save on primer will put you that much closer to having the cash for a paint job

Re: Primer Suggestions

YOu also have the option of finding the shoddy backyard painter who needs some quick cash for a bottle of booze. Guys like that have painted several things for me, usually part jobs, just once a whole car. And get it paintmatched in the right colour. I've gotten similar sized stuff painted for 5-800.

Worth a shot. That or ask someone to do it cheaper as a favour, ask them if you could offer some help back. My opnion is that it's cheapest to do it righ the first time, instead of spending on several stages of temporary, and then permanent paint.

Guess that apply's to most things automotive.

although once i do get the money to paint it, im probably gonna have to send it to Maaco which wont be easy for me but i'll have to cross that bridge when i get to it
