tell me wat you think...

I drew up a concept of wat I want to do to my '85 IROC in terms of body mods. I'm not sure exactly wat im goin to use to make the modified pieces, I need to do more research...but if any one has any ideas, I'd love them!

The front splitter, the rocker panels, and the rear side skirts are gona be extended down to about 1 to 1 1/2" off the ground. And the spoiler is gona be made of thick plexiglass and will be raised up about 3 inches.

*see attachments*

Thanks guys!

Re: tell me wat you think...

i dunno, ive seen extended gfx before, they dont look too good, much easier and cheaper to just lower the car. not sure about the spoiler either, but i DO like the hood, ive only seen one other 3rd gen with it but its not functional

I'm not a big fan of the late 70's early 80's 2nd gens. the spoiler looks like one from that. are you gonna buy one or make one? good luck!!

Re: tell me wat you think...

thanks. yea i love the hood, and i could alwaz cut out the hole if i wana. lol. the thing with the spoiler is im gona race it out at thunderhill wen i can, so i need some more down force than wat the car generates now...if i could find a huge, cheap(ish) carbon fiber or fiberglass wing id put that on there...

im gona make the spoiler out of plexiglass and bolt it on...some of the corvettes at the auto cross events ive gone to have that type on there.

Re: tell me wat you think...

I don,t know about the spoiler but I really do like the idea of the extended ground efx though. Keeping the stock stance and also making it look close to the ground would look realy good. I like that idea better than just lowering it. Keep us posted.

i been to autocross today and seen a vette with a spoiler that looked like what you are describing. I would say unless you are going for complete striped race car those spoilers don't look all that great, i can probably get a picture of it later.

Re: tell me wat you think...

well im not really goen for the most "beautiful" 3rd gen of all time....lol....i would rather put a carbon fiber wing like the trans am series cars on it, but i can afford one at the moment. so to me its the most functional for the money.

hmmm, I have mixed feelings about the front, but I like the back. Why not get that larger stock looking spoiler thats available from I think Hawks?

Oh, and about your drawing? Did you do that by free hand? Cause thats a freakin awesome pic!

Well you live in Cali, according to the little info box under your name, so I am guessing you don't have the issues we have here in New England with terrible roads frost heaves, pot holes etc etc. But still that's awful close to the ground.

Re: tell me wat you think...

The spoiler reminds me of the 5" at Hawk's and the nose reminds me what Banks did to the 3rd gen TA, to hit the land speed record.

I like it all. Go for it, if ya have the talent, or $ to have it done.

I've seen local autocross Prepared Class 3rd gens do the plexiglass mod too. Until you get close to the car, you never notice the plexiglass.

Re: tell me wat you think...

Thank you! It took me a LOT of time. Yeah I dont really like the idea of completely slamming the thing to the ground, so I came up with this. lol.
----------
Everything I'm gona have to do by hand...cant afford to have someone else to do it. I think the plexiglass will keep the already beautiful lines and help me stay planted on the road...being in the air is not something I want to experiance again. lol

Re: tell me wat you think...

Damn you....

I have a whole spare ground FX set, including front & rear bumper covers, for my GTA.

I can see me setting them up, and modding them off the car, painting them, then putting them on. I was already planning on modding my spare rear bumper cover, like nosaint did his.

Re: tell me wat you think...

I am not a big fan of changing these cars body, mainly because I love them the way they are . Keep in mind that if you lower the ground effects, your going to tear them up a whole lot.

The hood looks great, adds a little somethin to the massive hoods these things have!

Re: tell me wat you think...

before lowering the ground effects I would lower the car where you want it and go from there. Drop your roll center for better handling since it is going to be an autox car. I'm sure your going to do adjustable components so you can set the car up for the track and be able to set spring rates so that the car wont bottom out. With fiberglass on good bottom out and your front piece is gone. Would be very nice if urethane was an option though. (what the stock front pieces are made of) It could take a few quite a few impacts before letting go. I like the hood. i have a carbon fiber version I bought from someone on the west coast for my 4th gen. And the spoiler... I don't know how it would attach without cracking the fiberglass spoiler too much over time. Might not be a bad idea to check out hawks 5in and see if you like it and can use it. Or like you said get an adjustable race wing. good luck and keep us updated on your progress.

Yes! I drew it free hand; it took me about two days to get all the lines right. Thanks guys!

Yea im not exactly sure how low the gfx are gona be, cuz in the drawing ther wasnt really an accuret way to measure just how low it was. hopefully i can mock it up on my dads camaro this weekend if he lets me, and if it doesnt rain. lol

I just found this post... https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/auto...oiler+ducktail ...nd im liking it...i think that maybe instead of the plexiglass, partly becuz idk howd id attatch it, that ill try this out!

Re: tell me wat you think...

small update...i decided that it would perhaps be easier to buy another set of gfx for an iroc, and then cut and fit them to the bottom of the existing ones. thus making them less prone to breaking and cutting down on the man hours that would go into making them outa fiberglass.

any comments/advice?

sounds like a good idea, and if you going to make a spoiler like in the other thread it is going to take a lot of hours getting it just right.

yeah thats the conclusion that ive started to come to. i think that im gona just and get my car on the track and then build a fully custom mid engine car that ive had designed for a while; thats where ill spend the time doen the fiberglass. lol

i read around here that to properly lower the car you need to use drop spindles... not sure about it my self tho

I love the spolier i was going to start fabing up one just like that because i think the stock ones are way too small for the look im going for . and the ground effects are nice i wanted to take one of the frount clips from a nother car to add the look i wanted. Good job

Re: tell me wat you think...

Ok, so I have a new idea for the spoiler, and I think I'm going to stick with this one. It addresses the problem of it ripping off at any respectible speeds. Its a little hard to explain, but I'll try my best.
I make a one piece spoiler out of lexan or plexiglass that would go about 3 to 4 inches above the stock one. Instead of attaching it to the rear hatch and the fiberglass spoiler thats there; I make, for lack of a better term, uprights that attach to the tail lights and support the new spoiler from behind. I drew another picture to try explain it better.
So...tell me wat you think!

Re: tell me wat you think...

I really like the spoiler and have always thought our cars would look good if someone would make one like that for our cars. You think you can make one for me? If you wouldn't mind let me know how much and good luck.

Re: tell me wat you think...

It sounds like a great idea. The one thing I'm not sure about is because my car is for the track, and I dont care as much as others about the detail and look of it. Let me put more thought into designing it and I'll let you know how I think it'll turn out.

Re: tell me wat you think...

Thank you. put pics up when done please. I'm waiting for the result. Good luck.

Ps. What class are you planning on running the camaro in. My friend and I were going to run one at our local track, but the only class they would let us run it in was sportsman, and the competitive cars in that class were running tube frames. We thought the third gen would out handle any stock based cars but we didn't think it would be competitive against the tube chassis cars.

Re: tell me wat you think...

Um wat sanctioning body are you running in? SCCA, NASA? I'm building the car to run NASA time trials, and I wont know wat class I'm in until the car is done, and a official looks, or "grades" the car. lol. I also run SCCA Solo2 in my dad's '87 irocz. We run in Streep Prepared E. Or wait...are you talking about drag? lol

Re: tell me wat you think...

i dont know anything about auto-X but i just looked up the "earnhardt iroc" just figuring that there was a bit of R&D for that car. the spoiler does look a little higher and the ground-fx do look a little lower. you may want to check it out and try to "imitate" it. my opinion....the money and time spent could be better used on other parts of the car to make it perform better.
