Hey everyone,
I have looked at alot of threads with people down talking the 50.00 paint job, using a roller & Rustoleum paint from Cheapo-Depot, so me being the cheap S.O.B I am (and the S.O.B in need of a paint job) I decided to start my own little project. But, I wont be using a roller, Im using a HVLP spray gun.
So heres the run down, over the past few weeks I have sadned her down, filled every nook & cranny, the whole 9 yards, about a week ago I laid the first 2 coats and wow, not too shabby... since I cant paint you the picture with words,I'll just shut up now.
BTW, theres been NO wet sanding or buffing as of yet.










So far, I have paid: $19.90
Stay tuned for coat 3,4,5 and wet sanding & buffing/polishing.
I will update every time I get a chance.

 

That looks pretty damn good for rustoleum. That's probably the best "cheapo" paint job ive seen. Can't wait to see it wetsanded.

 

I've been intrigued by the Rustoleum jobs ever since I found the original thread on the Mopar board by the guy with the orange Charger.

Please make sure to keep us updated on this.

 

doesn't look great right now, but after wetsand/buff it should look pretty good. right now my cars in rustoleum primer, I rattled canned it on though. I didnt know rustoleum paint could be sprayed through HVLP guns.

 

Sure you can spray it with an HVLP gun! It's nothing more than a straight enamel, which is what they 30 had years ago when your paint choices were enamel or lacquer.

I haven't sprayed it on a car, but I sprayed my shutters for my house two weekends ago, they are aluminum and I did them about nine years prior. To spray it you need to reduce it about 25-30%, depending on how warm it is out and how smooth you want it to flow out.

I think it was tacky in about an hour and I could take them off the sawhorses they were laid out on a couple hours later.

They did however fade badly in 5-6 years on the front of the house which gets the direct sun, but as long as everyone that does the Rustoleum job understands the lack of UV protection it's not an issue.

Nice work on the car though.

 

That looks pretty good, but i have done some of that wet sanding and buffing on laquer paint jobs. I would rather use the Acrylic Enamel paint that flows smooth and shines with out all the wet sanding and coat after coat and more sanding. Here is pretty cheap place to buy auto paint and primers sealers and clear coats for you D.I.Y.s. I am planning on useing this paint myself in the Acrylic enamel.

I also used rustoleum on mine but I rolled it instead of spraying it. I think you should have good results with it. Mine looked just like yours before wetsanding. Heres a finished pic.

Awesome man, Its good to see that alot of people are happy with the Rustoleum jobs.

 

Do you have pics of before the paint and what grit sand paper did you use thanks alot

 

Looks like it "Orange Peeled" alot but for $19.00 I guess you got what you paid for its not bad from a picture or distance standpoint.

 

That looks pretty good! I also did the same thing with a car that I wrecked pretty bad. The new body panels were a rainbow of colors. I posted a video on YouTube just to show a friend and since then I've gotten a TON of emails asking how to do it. I'm starting a forum just about Rustoleum paint jobs, how to, tips, experiences etc. If anyone has done this and want to even just post pictures to show off their job then go for it. I know when I did it I had to scour the internet for info on the right way to do it. Figure this may help some newbs as well as let experienced people answer questions or show off.
