Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
ok heres the interior updates besides the headliner.
i went to HUMOUNT.COM and had a customized stereo frame made.
looks awesome to me. and they can do any font/words you want to show. Its really red led's in person but in the photo is looks orange.
also i didn't like having the tire pressure display in the lower console. i wanted it near the rest of my gauges so i can see it without having to take my eyes fully off the road.
i cut out that coin pocket or misc. slot that is under the headlight switch in the 82-84 style bezel.
and installed the tire pressure display in the opening.
i wish my camera showed my interior as real nice black but the photos dull it to a grayish black. i hate it but what can ya do.
also just note that these pictures were taken when parts of the dash and console where still in pieces

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
i did this job all in a day. im quite proud of myself for this.
The knight rider bumper has these wide grill openings. in the show and other replicas they have 2-3 fog lights to fill in this gap.
before i just put mesh to fill it in but i could still see the honeycomb inner bumper. i removed it and installed 3 fog lights on each side. 1 set was stock and i added 2 more sets from the autozone kits.
i also added a waterproof speaker so if in the future i wana have some fun at car shows and have kitt's voice being heard outside as kids or fans walk by.

i also added led taillights. love them and wasn't too hard to install.
they are also sequential. so when i use my turn signals and go left or right.
the 3 sections blink 1, 2, 3 and keeps repeating til i turn off the switch.
and obiviously all functions still apply. parking lights then get brighter as i hit the brake etc...

Looks great bobby!! I dig the interior work that you've done so far.
Refresh my memory...what tire monitoring system did you get, and where'd you get it? You can PM me if you want... Ide like to get something like that since I have an eaton, and my rear tire pressures are pretty important. Ide like to get something that displays in red if there is such a beast.
Keep up the good work and the progress pics!! I really like the blend of original thirdgen/Knightrider style you have going!
Justin
EDIT:...nevermind. I think I remember having a discussion with you about how to make the display red for the one you have. Or something... Found the "Orange" TPMS on amazon and other sites. I might have to pick one of these up since I need new tires anyway.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
Here are pictures of my upper console i spoke about last night.
there are 6 touch switches in the center of the console. bought them at autozone.
red led lights up to indicate the item is off
blue led lights up once the item is on
all you do is take your finger tip and touch the center of the switch and it turns the item on or off.
the 3 red illumnated switches facing the driver side are the 3 switches for the 3 sets of fog lights in the front bumper
i did this to replace my toggle switches which i kept hitting my head on while leaning over to reach for things or grab stuff from the center console armrest lid.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
here are more close up photos.
the compass/outside temp display is now in front of me right above my eye so i just barely look up and there is the display as part of the upper console that extrends into the sun visor area.
also the knight rider upper console didnt have a spot for a dome light. i bought one meant for a camaro and i cut the hole and put in a autozone white led square block full of 20 tiny leds. very bright white.

i also added a rear view mirror that has map lights in the bottom and put in white leds. got the 194 led bulb repalcement from superbrightleds.com
also put the same led replacement as a red led in the floor lighting.
and i put switches in the ashtray section.
from left to right.
the first switch turns on my tire pressure display. the big black button in the middle is the kill switch for my computer. and the other red switch on the right connects power to my kitt voice box display which is in the dash where the turn signal display used to be.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
and heres just a quick look at the interior with most of the gadgets up and running.
you can see the tire pressure display on the left but all there is in the picture is green dashes. it takes the unit a minute or two to get the signal from the tires to display the numbers.
and also another picture of my radio setup but at night. it has blue tooth capability for phone calls and has aux jack and also a usb port which charges my iphone but also controls the ipod inside the phone. so i can skip songs and control volume from the radio controls

HAHA!!!! thanks cruzer
i haven't installed it yet. but i was able to get the computer cables to reach under the trunk carpet and into the cargo area. i plan to mount the computer there and hide it with the cargo lid.
i also upgraded the motherboard. i'll give pictures and specs at a later time when i finally get it all in the car.
i also installed dragon naturally speaking which is voice recognition software for the knight rider kitt voice for when im at car shows.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
haha ive seen the movie haha. thanks a bunch guys.
all i did was take a bunch of different upgrades and mods and then mix that with different styles. and then combine with what i would want in my car at my finger tips and then take all of that and make it look like it belongs.
that was the biggest challenge which was making all these mods flow and look like they belong.
i hate having to keep taking the interior apart but i think ill be good for a long time. bites tongue. haha
i still need to put the computer and monitor back in. ill post updates when i can.
this saturday a friend of the family is welding in my subframes so ill post before and after saturday night.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
i bought it on ebay search tpms orange tire pressure display or something along those lines.
it goes for around 140bucks just plugs right in your cig. lighter socket for the display.
the sensors are internal with the valves and you just pay like 60bucks labor at a tire shop to install them.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
pretty accurate, i mean it changes as you drive by like 1psi or 2
but its very accurate and you can set it to when it will display red and beep to tell you your pressure is low. like 26psi it will go red and beep at you until its brought back to proper pressure.
im happy with it and every one else wants too much money for something like that

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
depends where you wana mount it. i cut off the cig. connector and hard wired it to a switch in the ashtray section.
red and green wires go to 12v, black to ground and the white wire is left alone as it is the antenna.

not a problem happy to help. you could mount it flat in your ashtray section if you just want it as a reference to check the pressure from time to time.
or if you want it always visible like mine well now your gota get creative. good luck
just double check on the wires i dont want you blaming me if something goes wrong haha.

yeah but the dakota digital unit does not use the valve stem it is like a Ford style TPMS that mounts inside the rim and you can use any regular valve stem with it

Kitt... the only issue with the dakota set is its over $120 just for two sensors. I do like how they mount to the wheel not to the valve stem, but for just 20 bucks more, I can get the entire set up like bobby has.
Same with the other links you sent from tire rack. Those kits are all pretty expensive, and dont seem to have the features and nice display like the orange kit. HOWEVER...that Hella kit has a changable background color option. Thats interesting... Still good info for anyone looking though...

great work bobby. I wish I had the time and money. I'd be all over it like a rash dude.
It's good to mix and match according to personal taste.
I'm dripping to know what all them switches are for....and what gauge wire etc run to and from switches.
could you tell me the part # for switches if you recall. I looked at AZ.com but found nothing.
Thanks.
Keep up the awesome work. Come a long way there man.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
i threw away all the packaging for the switches, just go to autozone or maybe advance and they should be with all the switches and electrical stuff.
they are 9.99
6 switches in total.
- compass display
-fuel pressure gauge
-air/fuel ratio gauge
- power antenna (because i hate it always coming on even if i use cd or aux jack
- radio/stereo
-rear hatch light which is also white led kit from autozone
and i used mainly 18gauge and around that for most wiring. used thicker for wires goin directly to the battery like the car computer and then fuses and all that fun stuff.

Nice work! I can't wait to get started on mine, I have everything planned for it, including chrome/powder coating.
I really like the birds in the sail panels also, nice touch. Wish I would have thought of that when I did mine...

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
Ok the subframes are in.
here are some pics of before and during installation. i left to catch up on some sleep since i work nights. but the guy who did the connectors put the camera back in the car and lifted back up to finish putting the exhuast back together.
the camera was full and longer story short i dont have the money wide shot of the connectors in. ill try to jack up the car on my days off to take the final picture.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
ok the drive home was nice the flat decent roads was very pleasant and i felt the difference.
the rear feels more connected with the car and my actions with the steering wheel.
unfortunately as expected i also feel the bumps in the roads pretty well. of course i felt the bumps pretty darn good with just my blistein shocks and struts.
but if you want handling u better have a comfortable seat.
also theres plenty of clearance from the ground and from the exhaust.
so im fine with it. heres 2 more pics

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
quick update....
after the drive to work it really is better to drive, the car really just cruised smoothly all the way to work like it never has before.
like i said before everything felt more connected underneath, and its supposed to.
before it would feel like the front wheels and rear wheels would twist seperately kinda like you would to sqeeze water out of a towel. and im referring to tight whindy roads.
but now it flows smoothly and hugs curves and twists on the roads much better.
all in all im very pleased with the results

I havent checked this thread in a while, and I am really loving your T/A. I love the early T/A Tributing touches.
If you dont mind me asking, what did the welding on the SFC's end up costing? I have a set waiting to be welded in.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
hey thanks for your returning interest.
the sfc's cost me 160 incl. shipping from georgia to connecticut.
then free installation because my dad knows a guy with a brother with a shop. he does misc. jobs on the weekend and did it for me in like 4-5 hrs. it did it right took his time and it came out great.
but ive heard around 200 from other ppl for installation. UMI says should take 2hrs so multiply the labor costs from there but im guessing closer to 3hrs depending how effiencient the shop is. took mine longer cuz its just one guy doing me a favor.

hhaha nope cant beat it. esp. when its a good job done. not something that will break soon after and then have to pay for a better job which defeats the purpose of the free favor

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
Ok two months ago, i added a cd/dvd drive for the car computer.
like the touch screen, i wanted it to look like it belongs.
so i did my best and i took a spare piece of dash trim and adapted it to hold the drive.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
then today i spent all day in the garage and installed a rearview mirror fron gentex on ebay and i paid extra to have it have a red display.
and to replace the old compass temp gadget i had, i bought some alphanumeric led displays and wired them to say K.I.T.T.
I installed that in the old slot my original comp/temp gadet was to fill in the empty plexiglass space.
the third picture is a full shot of the interior as of now.
sorry the camera sucks the flash turns all my black to a dull gray.
ill try to take some day pictures tomorrow.

Re: My 1986 Trans AM take a look...
i haven't tested it yet in the car to be honest. i have the wires going all the way to the trunk. i just havent had to time to come up with a mounting method for the computer.
i tried the dvd drive before in the house. works like any other computer drive.
and i couldnt get it to read the disc in the car as a test. so i bought a usb booster cable to boost the signal for longer distances.
it has that issue because its completly powered by the usb cord that sends the dvd signal.

Man that interior is killer, especially all lit up!
When are you going to run out of electronic gadgets to put in there? lol
I, myself, just got my shaved door kit in the mail, and it can control up to 7 different things. So far I have listed out 5 things that I want it to control. Might be something that you could look into, so you can operate some things on the car without even touching it.
