front end damage

I was wondering if anybody can give me some advice if the damage on this 91 z28 is reparable and how hard would it be. I thought it would be just replacing front bumper but the hood doesn't shut very good.

Re: front end damage

it is hard to say for sure. but it seems that the the damage is not too bad. i would look at the gap between the door and the front fender to see if the wheel well was bent at all. also if the radiator support was bent, it will need to be straightened. if you know how the damage happened it would probibly help also. looks like the car went nose first in to a ditch

the main question now is how i fixx the mounts where the crush bar was on?
I think i have to cut and weld a new piece in, is that true? here are pictures

Re: front end damage

do i need to have a crush bar thing bolted in place to have a bumper? It looked like bumper wasn't really attached to it, but there are about half of bolts missing on this z28

Re: front end damage

The steel bumper isn't cosmetically necessary for the front facia. But you are decreasing your safety. The front frame horns both need some straightening, everything else looks bolt on from a donor car.

Re: front end damage

looks like the last owner if it did hit a pole. didnt hit it very hard.
the front of the hood still looks pretty straight.
looks like it hit a wall or something and flatted the front of the car.

could try hammering the other side of the fenders and do some body work if your good at doing that if its not overly to bad.

Re: front end damage

looks like the frame rails are bent. It needs to be put on a frame rack and pulled in order to get the front rails back in shape then bolt the new bumper bar on....and for everything else to line up correctly

Re: front end damage

i already started to work on getting the dent at the door fixed, but it's hard without tools, all i have is hammer and dolly set to fix dents and i cant reach on the inside of the door to get the dent out. The fenders should be easy to fix as i can get them off and reach the other side easy. The frame rails are what been bothering me. I will look at it more closely and see how badly it's bent as i don't have the money to put it on frame rack. The reason i was thinking of not putting the crush bar in is because i don't have the tools to get those horns straighten out.
Thanks for the input

Re: front end damage

well, i have an update and not a good one. When i jacked the car up i found where previous owner never used the jack point but just would stick a jack somewhere under the car and start jacking it up
pics of course:

----------
here is picture of other side, and also i found that hatch motor wasn't working so previous owner just welded it in one place and unplugged it.

started taking door panels and tried to take out a dent on passenger side but can't reach inside the door to get it completely out.

I'm still trying to figure out on how to fix those front horns/crush bumper supports without frame rack
also now i have two door panels that i can sell. They are red and in decent shape, will trade for gray or black panels or just sell.

Re: front end damage

got the fender off and looks like i found a crease. I am still hoping that it might've been made that way lool. But pretty sure something needs to be done. But what? as even frame rack would not help straighten the top rails out(i think)
here are some pics.

Re: front end damage

Looks o.k. in that picture to me. I don't think you have a problem here.

The shops I took mine to were confident they could straighten this mess out. The creases would have turned into cracks though so I replaced the front frame for safety. I was quoted 8Hrs labor for $400 just to do the straightening.

Re: front end damage

The underbody looks bad, like the car was in a ditch. Is that worth fixing ? I had a new 1988 monte carlo ss, was stolen and the guys drove it into a ditch and bent the font end right up. My insurance had the car fixed, even installed a new frame but this was a brand new car. They had it for 2 months. Traded it in right after i got it back for a blazer. The car never drove or handeld right again.

Re: front end damage

i will try to get good pictures from under the car and inspect closer. I am hoping it will be ok they way it is. I have some new pictures where i started on getting the fender fixed and new/used bumper that i wanted to put on today but because the light and bumper support bar turned out to be broken i was not able to try to put the bumper on.

i tried to take a picture of what the gaps look like

Re: front end damage

It doesn't look like you have any real frame damage, it looks as if the hood, fenders and bumper just all shifted back in the collision. Looks like some easy bolt ons. Good luck finding the 91-92 front GFX, gm discontinued them.

Re: front end damage

Thanks for input. As far as GFX i will be using front part from 87 and molding in the sides that i have to give the 91 GFX look
I got few new pictures today and also found where the power steering leak is. Not sure how to replace the hose tho. Any ideas?

also looks like it needs an oil change pretty badly

Got new filter on there. Another problem i have is i can't figure out how the hood latch cable originally runs. I will look under the hood of my bird but not sure if they are the same

With the light/bumper support bar in place

Re: front end damage

I took the car to a shop today and found out few things. First is bad news. The brakes are shot in the front. Rotor, caliper, and pads. Ti-rod ends are shot too(not sure of spelling). One of the wheels has the tire mounted backwards.
Good news is that she already been to frame rack. The frame been already straightened and is in decent shape. Been told to come back after geting the tire mounted correctly to check again.
and picture of course
