stock '82 fiberglass hood repair questions.

Hey guys I just picked up my "new" 82 crossfire fiberglass hood from one of our board members here (priest1981) and It needs alittle work. I've been searching on the web and I've found someways of doing this but I'd like to hear from some of you guys here who might have had some first hand experience with this kind of thing. first i'd like to repair some of the chips and cracks in the and and then after I'd like to mold an SS scoop onto it. My plan totally is to make this hood a "pin-on" hood. Is there any way to get the inner "skeleton" of the hood off without damaging the upper layer? Here's a couple pics of the damage and let's see were this takes us.

to fix cracks will need to grind a v shape into them so new fiberglass can grab to something. Where piece is missing put something under i and lay one layer of glass and when it's dry you will be able to work it easier. And i always thought that taking out the skeleton of the hood is bad idea because there would be no support, but if taking out in the middle for the scoop should come off when cutting a hole.

Re: stock '82 fiberglass hood repair questions.

I’m in a similar situation in that the underside supports on mine were cracked because they used the wrong hood struts. I ended up putting it away for a while and haven’t repaired it yet. I wouldn’t want to separate the two halves for two reasons. One is that GM recalled the hoods because they were separating at high speeds and I doubt I could fix something they decided not to. Secondly, you most likely will not get the hood back together in the original shape again. Which yours is probably not anymore either, and you would probably need to make a jig to hold it in place during the repair. Note that you may need special materials to repair it as well.

Here is the link to my previous post on this.

I was also warned about the hood separating which is good reason for using the hood pins you described.

Re: stock '82 fiberglass hood repair questions.

well I had to separate the skeleton from the upper layer to repair the upper layers damage, so I could glass both sides. I thought while I was at it I could atleast get everything cleaned up before I start glueing it back together. I had a thought though, would it be worth it to make a new skeleton out of 1/4 aluminum. To make it stable yet more simplified? i tought that if I could get the aluminum to bend in the right shape and then rivet it to gether it might work. About this Corvette body repair stuff I read in the other post. Do I have to have it or will just a regular fiberglass repair kit suffice for this? Were can I get this stuff just in case?

I would check a dealership or look around a Corvette forum. I ended up putting mine in storage since the Camaro I was going to put it in was hit in a parking lot.

Re: stock '82 fiberglass hood repair questions.

use whats called vette panel adhesive for rebonding ... To do repairs use 1982 vette advice since this was the first year the vette used smp the same as your hood. Ealier vettes require different resins to repair then the 82.

Re: stock '82 fiberglass hood repair questions.

Would I have to use a special fiberglass with this adhesive or can i just use some glass matt from wal-mart? Where can I find this Vette panel adhesive?
