I need some advice on buying a car.

the car is a 1986 pontiac trans am 305 4 barrel, th700r4 white t-tops 189,000kms i think about 100-110,000 miles. red interior with black seats.

http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/car/523804571.html

hes asking $1500 i offered $1000 heres what he had to say:

just to let you know that the plates are off the car, no insurance. Tranny fluid has basically all leaked out. I have paper under the front and don't plan on adding any more tranny fluid to start it up as it will slowly leak again. Last time I drove it was back early november 2007 ran really really rough at 10mph out of my underground so I drove back in. On start up there was an occasional metal on metal. (sounded like that) sound from right side of engine that went away. engine really really rough at first start up. Had a tune up back in september 2007 but the engine was rough on start up then got worse over the next 2 months, then the metal on metal sound around November 2007. (was rough before tune up and after )This would probably be an "as is sale". I would not say no to your offer of $1000 cash but I am not interested in a trade. You should look at the car first if your still interested.

so as for the grinding noise on startup im assuming starter, possibly fly wheel teeth being chewed up , which isnt a huge issue as i work at a shop. he did say it might have a rounded cam lobe, but has since taken that out of the ad or i read it in another ad for a different car. as for running rough on start up, EGR valve? the tranny leaking fluid mabey just one of the rubber hoses got pulled out from a steel line, or seeping through a hose as its been sitting (the one i have now does that unless i drive it.) minor flaws are headlight motor does not work, but will work manually(not a big issue.) has a small dent on a front fender and i believe the front nose is cracked as well. i have not seen the car in person yet, but the interior seems to be in decent shape. i offered him $1000 bux but figure if i was to look at it tell him more bad news mabey get it into the 6 or $700 range then that would be more my price range.
sorry for the long post but i miss driving my bird and want another one in not as good shape that i can drive.

I think you could find a better deal. If you're looking for a car that doesn't run and is in nice condition you can find a decent one for 800 bucks. There are pleanty of TAs and firebirds on craigslist. You could find a decent stock running one with no problems for under 2000 easily.
