Re: hatch pros help!
I PM'd you the following:
hi there it is glued to the glass with the black urethane, dont be nice with it, rip it off the glass, it will come off
a dead blow rubber hammer will do it
make sure you disconnect the glass surround metal frame ends first
two small screws in each end of the deck plate
its real simple
i swapped my deck plate onto another glass and installed it all on the 82 in under a couple hours, from beginning to end even including the time it took to hack a coupel of the studs since they busted loose inside the plate and spun on me, had to weld new ones on it
make sure the hatch glass is aligned to the car body before you glue the deck plate down, now will be the time to align/correct it
mine was really horribly misaligned, the glass shop that replaced the glass years ago did it all wrong and not only was the glass misaligned but the deck plate was hanging past the end of the QP by about a 1/2"
i took my time aligning it all in steps and now it is 100% perfectly aligned

Re: hatch pros help!
trim doesnt need to be off nope, just the ends that are screwed to the deck plate on the outer edges
you wont brake the glass by accident it is VERy thick and VERy strong
you would have to smack is VERy hard with a heavy metal object to break it
the plate will come off, be tough with it
Dno worries
dont be afeared

smack the underside of the deck upwards from underneath
do the ends of it first
while pulling on it away from the glass
a long thin metal blade of some type jammed between the glass and the deck on the top side of the glass with a hammer will do alot to separate the glue
if its done in the cold air and not out in the baking sun then it wont want to re-stick itself so bad
i did mine on a real hot sunny day, it came apart pretty easily actually
but it wasnt the factory glue, it was a glass shop's glue
so it only had a single bead and wasnt very wide even
but of course you dont want to lay too much urethane down anyways, it will squeeze out all over and look bad
and when you get a tube of urethane get it from a REAL auto glass shop it is about 15 bucks a tube for caulking guns and make sure it is the HV variety it will say HV at the end of the part number of it on the tube, dont get the crap from NAPA etc it is crap i just foud that out when i put the quarter side glasses back into the 85 elky we are restoring right now, their HV urethane is crap horrible
when i re-set my hatch deck onto my glass i propped open the hatch with a 2x4 standing up in the storage area and it was just the right length needed to keep the glass up off the weatherstripping enough to be able ot keep the deck plate clear when setting the deck plate onto the glas,s so i could set it down as closely lined up as possible and the urethane allowed me ot fudge the plate around just enough to align it where it needed to be
i did it without any C clamps or anything to keep it in place while i put the stud nuts back on and tigthened them up
but i seem to be really talented at doing things by myself i can even remove and reinstall hoods and doors by myself even on these cars and other vehicles - i have taken apart so many cars and trucks and reassembled them that i have learned tricks over time, ppl dont believe it til they see it hehehe
good luck

Re: hatch pros help!
The bolts aren't the only thing holding the decklid to the glass, there's a ton of really nasty black glue stuff, which the piano wire trick works on. Just take your time and pull slowly, it releases slowly, kind of like stretching chewing gum. There is also a tech article on how to do this:

Re: hatch pros help!
i already explained everything about the urethane sealer you need to know above
go read
a big bead across the top side of the glass is how to do it, towards the top edge of the deck and down at the ends towards the end of the car
then lay the deck down on it
easy
dont forget to make sure the u-shaped rubber channel stays on the rear edge of the hatch glass it will fall off pretty easily
theres actually two of them
one is 7" long and the other is 29" long
there is also a pair of black plastic rectangle kind of shaped things at each deck end they stick on in place with the urethane they are like slider/scuff plates of sorts
dont forget them
its sorta kinda tricky
a little
use urethane to stick things in place
no such thing as being too messy

Re: hatch pros help!
I would imagine pretty much any kind of silicone caulk would work fine. Since it gets sandwiched between the glass and decklid, it's not really in any danger of coming loose. If I were doing it, I would probably just use a liberal amount of clear silicone caulk. I'd probably also try to get it as close to the front edge of the decklid as possible. That leaves less room for water/ice/snow/dirt to get in the gap there.

Re: hatch pros help!
you can lay it almost completely flat- shut the hatch all the way except a little bit so that the deck doesnt rest on the bumper stops and wont touch the top of the QP rain gutter at the taillights outer top corners
wood shim it
or whatever you need to use

yes just stick them in place with urethane
dont have to be neat about it
too much urethane is better than too little
just make sure you get them stuck in place straight

Re: hatch pros help!
:O
if you arent going to use the urethane then you better not evne try to do this, as you are wasting your time
do not use silicone for anything on the vehicle
urethane is not silicone
go get the urethane from the glass shop
silicone is for noobs who have no idea what silicone and urethane even are and how INSANELY different they are, and is for junk yard beaters and is very temporary and will cause you problems,
silicone is extremely different and does not seal the same way as urethane, urethane is a higher volume and way different sealing properties and is meant for sealing AUTO glass, not your fish aquarium or bathtub..
two totally different animals
i feel i am wasting my time trying to help here
no point in giving all the details needed to do this correctly when its just gonna be hack slapped together incorrectly
hmm
use the silicone then
some ppl you cant help i guess, and would rather learn the hard way
good luck!

Re: hatch pros help!
decklid is done and finished.. it wasnt so much difficult to remove and put on but it worked alot easier with two people, to align it and set it down on the urethane.
