painting my wheel tubs / sheetmetal

i just recently bought an 87 trans am that has been tubbed out...unfortunately the person who had it before me spilled battery acid all over the sheetmetal and pretty much destroyed the color . so i was forced to paint it...unfortunately i am using spray cans...but i am just wondering what are some helpful hints to get this as glossy / shiny and durable as possible...i have already sprayed it with 2 coats and looks pretty good...i am wondering though about sanding with very very light sand paper and clear coat to get that nice finish..as in whats a good process of doing this , how much to use etc...i have a steady hand and keep the paint straight and even but thats about all i am good for....any and all responses are appreciated
