Gas filler relocation
Gas filler relocation
I was thinking about relocating my gas filler to behind the license plate. Does anyone know of a gas tank that will bolt right in or am I going to have to do some work to make one work? Thanks for the help.

unless you plan on completely losing your trunk i don't see it working. Other than that it would probably have to be custom, and you may get away with using the same filler neck and tank if someone can re-locate it on the tank some how. Other than that there is no "easy" way of going about it i don't believe.

Re: Gas filler relocation
You would then have your gas filler neck running through the interior of the car. You would probably compromise structrural integrity a bit, but id like to see your progress.
Might be much easier still to make it come out of the bumper, because you could keep it "outside" the car.

Re: Gas filler relocation
You have 4 options...
1: Straight back, to behind the license plate, but you better have a GOOD seal on the tube to keep fumes out.
2: Bring the neck up under the side panel, loop it around behind the tail light, to behind the license plate. But good luck getting it to fill up quickly. I'd think the slope would be too shallow to fill the tank good.
3: Do what Redraif did. She turned the neck just enough to get under the side panel. She has to open the hatch, open the rear "glovebox", to get to the filler cap. Must be fun pulling the pump out, and not spilling gas inside the car.
Or,
4: Come up with a way to hinge your tail light on the drivers side, to hide the filler cap. Like the 56 Chevys were. Hidden behind a tail light.

Re: Gas filler relocation
my only worry about that would be rear-impact. I have to assume that there is a reason cars stopped doing it. None the less, i would ultimately like to see this happen on a firebird with the lisence plate in the bumper, with a camaro lisence plate frame so you can have the flip down function to cover it up still...old school it. not trying to put it down, just a couple things to think of. none the less i would love to see this done and results at that!!!

Re: Gas filler relocation
Thats right! i totally forgot that the firebird plates are down below. That wouldnt be very hard at all.
I guess when he said behind the plate, i automatically assumed "flip down", which in turn made me think of camaro.
I think the EASIEST option, would be to hinge the tail light of a camaro. It would require a latch to "clip" back into the same position everytime.
Another option might be, to make just PART of the tail light flip open. Like the late 70's camaro. That big black insert on towards the middle of a camaro tail light for example.

Re: Gas filler relocation
i was speaking of the camaro's flip down plate on the bird...but as mentioned it would be hard all in all, but i figured that would be the cleanest looking thing and keep more storage space being lower. All in all this is going to be a hard thing to play with. Our firebirds have a bit of room behind the center filler panel for the tail lights...maybe something can be put behind that. Not sure of what he's even talking about bird/caro yet so this is all speculation without his input.
----------
could hinge the center tail light filler panel to pop down just like the camaro and it would hide the key hole and the newly added gas cap. Just a thought. I think it would be easier to hide than camaro but anything with a bit of money is capable.
as well you can make a filler panel to go in the middle of the tail lights on a camaro so...anything is possible.

Re: Gas filler relocation
It is for a camaro. I was going to remove the keyhole all together and just mount the gas filler in its place. I am not too concerned with loosing storage. The whole car is getting tweaked in some manor. I really don't think too many people will like it that much. Do you think that a caprice style tank would work? It has the rear fill on it too. I am not too concerned with fabrication either. I have pretty much anything I will need to mount the tank. My last resort is going to be a fuel cell in the very rear of the car where that storage area is.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: Gas filler relocation
Let me throw this out there - if you are just looking to give the car a smoother look, and not have the gas filler neck on the side of the car, instead of re-engineering the whole rear end, have you considered mounting the filler neck in the back of the driver's side door jamb?
I've seen it done before, it looks great, and eliminates any issues you may have with the angle of the neck filling the tank properly.
Just a thought.
