Re: Rust!!!!! Help!!!!

if that was me, I'd take the wheel off, grind the rust off and fiberglass it. then do the paint work.

but if you dont want to do this, atleast go to walmart and buy some "rust converter" to stop the rust.

Re: Rust!!!!! Help!!!!

Try this article, its one of the best i have come across in a long time. I have used the walmart rust converter and the rust came back, and my cousin used a name brand paint over rust treatment and it worked for a bit but came back also.

It means that you get a wire wheel, you hit the rust with it to remove any loose rust. Then, you take some POR-15 and paint it on the rust and surrounding area. It will need to be painted over, but you won't have to worry about it rusting again.

Re: Rust!!!!! Help!!!!

Basically, I recommend getting some Marine Clean and Metal Ready from por-15s website (very little needed for your application). Marine Clean gets rid of any dirt and grease and the Metal Ready puts a zinc coating on the metal to help POR-15 stick to it and prevent rust.

Great stuff and works like it is supposed to. It also goes a long way, I did the entire underside of my car, rear wheel wells, and top of front wheel wells + battery tray and vacuum cylinder tray with 1 quart. I still have some left too.

Re: Rust!!!!! Help!!!!

I would recommend just sanding it down and putting the POR-15 on. The bubble is there because the metal below the paint has semi bad surface rust on it. Anything you spray on it would just get stopped by the paint and not do much good.

As long as its 70 degrees where you are working (turned a 1/2 hour project into weeks of waiting for me ), the entire process should only take about 45 minutes. The main time consumer is just sitting and waiting for the Metal Ready to do its magic and take care of the rust.

Heres the thing. I dont have the skills to the sanding down part for the bubbles. I can do the wheel well but I cant do the fender so I will have to take it somewhere to be done. The weather sucks here still (high 30's low 40's and if you live in IL you know the weather...it sucks) Theres no rust anywhere else on the car, not even under

Re: Rust!!!!! Help!!!!

Do you mean you don't have the skills to paint over the fixed rust? The sanding and POR-15 application really doesn't take any skill. Just sand it down to bare metal around the rust (say 1/2'' around the rust) and get all the lose rust off. Wipe with Marine Clean (2 parts water to 1 part Marine Clean would work fine), spray with Metal Ready and keep wet for 1/2-1 hour depending on how bad the rust is, then wipe it off with a wet rag. Then just paint the POR-15 right over the rust and surrounding area (area that was sanded to bare metal).

It will need to be painted over, and I would recommend having a body shop match the paint. That shouldn't be too badly priced.

Re: Rust!!!!! Help!!!!

Well, I can do the wheel well but in the second picture its on the fender also. I cant do the fender but I can do the wheel well is what im saying. What color would you say my car is so I can get an Idea on what to do because I am thinking about using duplicolor because I have had some good results from them.

Re: Rust!!!!! Help!!!!

i like the grind and fiberglass guy at the top, hes right, cuz what is happening from the pix is that your flinging stuff of the road (rocks) and its chipping the paint, and exposed metal+rust right? well the fiber glass will be tougher, and wont just chip, been there, done that

just an idea to help you save some money, take it to a technical high school with an auto body shop and they'll be able to take care of that rust for alot cheaper than a shop.

Have you seen some of the kids in high school nowadays i would be terrified (semi-kidding)... But seriously the por 15 is some serious stuff. My friend did his whole under body of his plow truck and its going on 4 years now and its barely chipped. As soon as i can get my iroc home i'll be doing the whole bottom in por 15. Its really not that hard to do just sand wash and paint. You'll have to get quotes from body shops they're all different with prices.
