Hood Insulation

Hey all,

I got a new IROC hood for my 91 RS and I was looking at my old hood insulation and noticing that it looked like crap, and I wouldn't want to move it over to the new hood. My question is, does it actually serve a purpose? What effects will it have if I run the new hood without the insulation?

Thanks in advance,

-Tim-

Re: Hood Insulation

A little more noise outside the car & your hood will be a little warmer when you drive. Thats all I can think of.

And probably louder when you shut it. Although, my 87's hood was sort of "loose" between the layers, so that might have contributed to it. But I really noticed a loud metal SLAM when shutting it sicne I removed it. The 86 I got still has new insulation...and its nice and quiet. Like the doors shutting.

Re: Hood Insulation

it also protects the paint from getting to hot from engine heat... but again most camaros ive had were missing it and id didnt seem to hurt them at all...

Re: Hood Insulation

that stuff does nothin but keep unnescessary heat inside. cause if you think about it there isnt much other places for the hot air to escape except through there. if you have it installed it has to escape through the underside of the car. granted during the winter it will run a lil cool but these cars were designed to run to hot so a lil dip in temp wont hurt.

Re: Hood Insulation

How do you remove the black plastic tabs without destroying them?

Re: Hood Insulation

I also had crappy hood insulation and removed it and replaced it with some from NAPA but I plan to paint the under side of the hood with heat resistant paint soon to make it look cleaner. You could do that if you don't like the crappy looking insulation. For the week that I when with out insulation it was a bit louder but I barely notice and my car black so the hood couldn't get hotter then it get all the time from sitting in the sun. To the thing about that stuff does nothing but keep unnecessary heat inside I pretty sure that if your car is like mine that it is open at the back of the hood and heat escape there over the windshield. What IROC hood did you get?

Re: Hood Insulation

It is just an aftermarket IROC replacment hood... My standard flat hood had a baseball bounce off of it up near the windshield, and then last year I got into an accident and that folded the front passanger corner down... Rather than fix the flat hood, I just bought an IROC one... It was at least the same price (if not cheaper) than the body shops quote to fix the flat hood

Anyways, thanks everyone for the input. Looks like the hood insulation isnt actually all that necessary.
