What to Blast Bottom of Car With?

Hi all

There is some minor surface rust on the bottom of my car and the paint and primer is peeling, particularily on the radiator support.

I was thinking our having this lightly blasted off with something, given a few passes of primer, and undercoated.

Would this be a sensible thing to do? What would be an appropriate material (media?) to blast with? I don't want to have to take anything off...

Cheers Tom

I've witnessed vehicles being stripped for painting with soda. Nice thing about it is that it wont damage things like conventional media's. Check out this thread, see what you think?

Good luck

I just put the car up on jack stands, broke out the wire wheel, and started grinding. Took a while, but I got all the rust off. I put POR-15 on it to help prevent rust from coming back.

With a lot of crawling around, getting rust in your eyes, and smacking your head on things, you can do a pretty good job with a wire wheel. I went this route mainly because it was cheap.

It is a descent amount, but is doable in about 4 days. Its all the prep that takes forever to get done.

I also plan on doing this when it comes time for me to install some subframe connectors.

Do you think something like this would work:

I have recently had good results with my clarke 5 gallon pressure blaster.. Needs a LOT of air but my compressor can handle it, never had to wait on it to catch up yet!

Re: What to Blast Bottom of Car With?

If you are not wanting to disassemble, use baking soda. It is cheap and doesn't warp the surface. The biggest concern is it doesn't pose any health risks. There is no concern of it getting in all the small spaces as it can be rinsed away with water and no adverse affects on the environment.

If you decide to go with a media such as sand...
The number one problem is it causes health issues such as Silicosis. Media's break down into fine dust that settles in your lungs. Even with precautions like respirators, the dust sticks to your clothes, and when blowing off or even cleaning the blast area, the dust becomes airborn again.
Also, media gets into all the small cracks and open area's between moving parts and can cause a lot of damage since it is difficult to get it all cleaned out.
Whichever way you go, use caution and be safe.
Just my $.02.

Re: What to Blast Bottom of Car With?

I would consider using a roll on bed liner for the underside. Im doing that to mine and a friend of mine did it to his 67 cuda. He used this stuff called POR-15 which you can roll or brush on then rolled the bedliner on, and its hard as a rock. Only downside is the POR is about 40 bucks a quart but its some really good stuff. As for the material to use for blasting I would try the soda cause the sand gets EVERYWHERE. He did his cuda 3 years ago and still finds sand comming out of it lol.

I payed to have my whole bodyshell sodablasted. It came out flawless. Theres was tons of old undercoating under the floor. It took about 4 hours to do the complete car. Best 1000$ ever spent. They even primed it with urethane primer for 200$. Check out my cardomain for pics
