rust around windshield

i have a couple rust spots around my windshield. the one in the middle im almost sure is causing a leak when it rains (leaks onto the dash). this is a non t-top car or i woulda expected that first. can i just put windshield sealant by the rust spot? or do i have to fix the rust and reseal the windshield? are there any threads on how to do this?

I had the same thing happen with my car. I had it taken car of when I had my car repainted, taking the windshield out is the best way to see what kind of damage you have.

I'm sure you could just drop some sealant on there to keep it from leaking, but its like putting a band-aid on cancer.

I'd pop the windshield and address it ASAP, because rust around the windshield can kill a car, as its one of the worst places to try to replace metal.

i agree but its gonna spend most its life in the garage so it will only see rain when i get caught in it. but for now i just want to be able to drive it without worrying.

is this something i can do myself? im very mechanically inclined but dont know what tools i would need to pop the windshield. ive done some bondo work before on a crappy car but body work is pretty new to me.

Re: rust around windshield

Pulling the windshield is a tricky business. Pro's have tools to do it, but even then it gets cracked now and then. The best method I've seen is to use WD-40 to loosen the sealant, then use a very thin wire to try and cut it. Patience is a virtue for sure. Even done right, you still may crack it. Be prepared for that.

Once the glass is off, you can assess the damage by the rust, and go from there. You will want to remove all signs of rust, then do some filler work, then protect it. On the spots you don't see, I'd even think about using POR-15 to help keep the rust from coming back.

Its certainly not a fun prospect, and may cars have been sent to the scrap heap for this very reason. Hopefully its not too bad.

Re: rust around windshield

i remember reading about a process you can get done after cleaning out the rust where a tech can come out with some device that attaches to the area, and fills the area with metal flakes or something and uses pressure and heat to fuse it in. anyone else hear of this or know what it's called? 'coz i definitely have the same problem

yea i think im going to have to scrap my car for this same reason. it didnt look too bad until i started poking into it. but once i knocked off all the loose **** i had a hole about the size of a dime. and theres air bubbles forming in the windsheild its self. so i can just imagine what it looks like under there
