Flared rear fenders...

Ignore the overall car (it's not mine) but I'm thinking about getting the rear fenders.

Yes, I'm asking for opinions, but let's let be nice here, OK? It's just as easy to say "Not for me/Not my style", or just NOT post at all, as it is to start spouting garbage & insulting, OK?

They'll give a 2" bulge, which is what a 4th gen rear axle is....wider than a 3rd gen axle. My tires sit virtually flush right now. So combined with these hand-laid fiberglass fenders & a 4th gen axle, they'll sit flush again, & easily allow them to be widened 2"! More if I wanted, but I don't see much point in more than a 11" wide 17" wheel. 12" would probably be pretty much the max, for a useble sized wheel.

Re: Flared rear fenders...

I think it would look really good, but you would have to use wider wheels and tires to fill up the extra space, or else it would just look goofy.

IMO if you do the rear fenders, you'd need to do the fronts as well, or it would look goofy

I did clarify above that it would allow me to run a 4th gen rear axle & widen my existing wheels. The idea is to step up from my current 285s & fit 315s. Or yeah...It WOULD look really goofy!

I'd have my wheels widened & a 4th gen axle ready to bolt in, before those fenders went on, so I wasn't stuck running narrow tires with those fenders for any amount of time.

I think it'd look really good all done (with the new rear and widened rims), I say go for it!

Re: Flared rear fenders...

Neil extended his rear quarters to fit 18x12 with 335's, his were done with steel, cutting and bulging the rear, though i think they were a little more than 2", maybe 3"?. These glass ones would do pretty much the same thing, i dont think they would look bad, so long as they were installed properly and blended to the body. Are they even still available?

Re: Flared rear fenders...

They are available....$600 for the pair.

I thoughgt about Neil'd method. I like it better, but with the way my GTA tail lights look like 1 wide piece of formed shiny plastic, there would be 2 gaps, that would hafta be filled somehow. Not to mention the cost...I inquired about doing them & only the outer sheet mtal, no inner work like Niel got.

Let's just say...$$$$$$$$$$$....It ain't gonna happen without me winning the lottery!

I realize you said it would allow you to run the wider rear, wheels and tires. It was my way of agreeing with you. Maybe I should have been a little more clear.

Sorry...My bad.

I see them as an a way to keep the Snypers I have....
not having to buy new wheels for a different offset...
and not to hafta mini-tub the car.

Re: Flared rear fenders...

I wouldn't bond the fiberglass to metal. Metal and fiberglass expand at different rates as temperature changes and they will separate/crack. Fabricate something inbetween maybe something like what the 4th gens do for sail panel to rear fender? Other than that it would be cool. The concept Camaro does a similar thing with widened rear(or perhaps it just appears that way) http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-20...-1920x1440.jpg

The 85-90 t/a side and rear ground effects might not work on these fenders which means you may have to go with a 82 or 84 rear bumper. You wouldn't have that problem of rust in the rear fender, ever.

Here is a link to some pics with this kit or similar kit on this thread:

A wide body bird.....

Thats would be sweet man. I mean, it's not like its been done many times before. I think by the time you filled out the wheel wells with bigger rolling stock it would give a much more subtle appearance.

It's easier to tell someone else to spend money than do it yourself.

I think it would look clean if done right, and as for the gaps next to the rear tail lights..... maybe you could do a faux air vent looking thing? Or make them functional gaps that keep the air flowing through to the rear so there's less friction? That would pretty much be for extreme high speeds though, but I think it would look cool as well, if I'm picturing it in my head right anyways.
