Need help with wheels

I have a 1990 RS. The original wheels are not on the car. I see on the door sticker that it came with 15 inch rims from the factory. Can I put the 16 inch rims on the car or do I have to stick with the 15s?

I am looking at the 16 inch IROC wheels. Someone told me that the rear has an offset and I wasn't sure if i could use them on mine or not.

Which is true... for the 90'~92' 16" factory rims... Not sure about the IROCs.

Look closely on the rims to see if there is and F and R stamped into them, which indicates front and rear. It all has to do with different back spacing. Like I said though, it may not matter with the IROC rims.

Re: Need help with wheels

The guy that has the rims said they are off an 87 Iroc and they do have the F and R stamped on them. I read that the offset was for the rear rotors. I have drums on my RS so I wouldn't think this would be an issue but I thought I would ask to see if anyone else has changed rims and if they had any issues.

Re: Need help with wheels

They will fit, no problem. Just make sure You put the rears on the rear. My IROC rims from my 86 fit on my 90 rs just fine when I had the drum brake rear.

Do you know if the IROC-Z emblem can be changed out?

As far as Ive always known, it was for backspacing, to keep the rim from rubbing on the tie-rod ends.

Put them in the correct location and you will have no issues.

FAIL... sorry but if you get the correct size tire, your speedo will be just as accurate as it was from the factory.. bigger wheel size just means that you have a bigger wheel.. there are literally hundreds of tire sizes out there and one will be accurate to factory specs.. now if you use the same tire that came with the 16's then it will be a little slow.. most 15's use about a 26" tire.. 16's are about a 25.7"..

What type black 15's?
Thats a pretty wide question.
and for the 16" question, you'll need shorter profile tires or new gears in the trans. for the speedo to read correctly.
And on another note,if you decide to go TPI you'll also need a new speed sensor.

if you already have acorn style lugs, they will work just fine with those wheels.
And if your car already had 15's on it from factory and everything is original on the car then the tire specs on the decal in the doorjamb should tell you all you need to know.
Just to play it safe, can you post a pic of one of the lugs?

Re: Need help with wheels

This is the closest thing I can find to what is on my car. I do not have access to my camera right now. The lugs measure close to 1 1/2 inch from the rim.

those lugs appear to be a lil small for the black 15" wheels you posted pics of.
the factory wheels on both 15&16 in. wheels had a pretty wide base compared to those. Not saying they won't work, but I would check one of the lugs on 1 of the wheels to see how the base fits before installing them.

Re: Need help with wheels

if you have an autozone nearby, they should have them.
You should also be able to find them from any local tire shop.
Remember,I didn't say the ones you already have won't work, you just need to place one on one of the wheels and see how they fit.
If the tapered part lays across the opening and seems to be a good match then you're good to go.
But,if the lugs fit the taper to deep and you have alot of the bevelled area on the rim exposed you will more than likely have problems down the road.
Hope that helps.

Re: Need help with wheels

I would like to go back to what was on the car. I have found the black lug covers on ebay. I think that the chrome lugs will stand out to much on the black.
