i am going to have my car re painted and was thinking of re duing my engine bay. i s it hard to re do the bay with the engine still in it. i know it would be eaiser to do it with the motor out but thats not going to happen. what do you guys think

 

i think it would be a huge pain in the *** with motor still in. well the only really really tough spot i think would behind the engine. which maybe if you removed the hood it would make it easier to reach that space.

 

i did the bay about three years ago but since than i have installed a ac delete panal and now it doesnt look right. i was thinking since i will have it at a body shop to get repainted why not get the engine bay done also.

 

oh, if you're having a shop do it. then yeah get it done.

 

its gonna be a major PITA for someone id say just leave it till you have the time to do it right what color is it now?

 

its painted black and i was going to keep it black. i just want to clean it up a bit more

 

I did mine this summer, while it is a PITA it's possible. I disconnected and removed everything except the brake resevoir/booster and some of the hardline hoses that run low down next to the wheel hump on the rails.

Label and tag everything, and take pics before you remove. There was a couple of wires that I couldn't get out of the way that I could have left but it would have been hard to paint around them. So I snipped and soldered them back in place and weather treated them. Here's some pics:



I used filter cloth (commonly used in construction, similar to silt fence in some areas) to wrap to motor and brake booster. This left enough room for me to get almost everywhere. Obviously I didn't get behind the motor, but I got behind it enough that you cant' see it unless you went looking. I didn't get the coverage I wanted on the blower cover and it's got some flat spots but it looks miles better than before.

I used about 4 cans of paint. There is some overspray on the brake lines but I don't think it looks that bad. If it stays there is another thing.

 

looks really good. i am goin to talk to the body shop about spraying it. still waiting for my hood anyway
