anyone else bugged by the difference between the front/rear fender flares??
WARNING!!! this may make you stare at your car with unnecessary scrutiny.
I'm just gonna go out and say it...GM got lazy making our cars. Look at the creases on the front fender flares just above the wheels. They're crisp and sharp, almost in the (excellent) style of new Caddy's. Now look at the rear. CURVED creases, more rounded and clearly different from the front. Most likely because it's easier to stamp the front fenders with that quality than the rear quarters. Look at them by themselves and you'd think they're different cars!
I'm probably just **** but this ANNOYS THE HELL OUT OF ME!!!
has anyone else wanted to do some bodywork to fix this?
has anyone DONE work to fix this?? If so post some pics please.
It's a little thing but I'm all about the details. If so many people flipped out about the "halo" in that poor guys gorgeous vert with shaved gas cap, then please tee off on this thread.

Re: anyone else bugged by the difference between the front/rear fender flares??
The body work is easy to do if you replace the rear 1/4s with 82-83 1/4s. As many have noticed, the 82/83 cars have differences that the 84-92 cars don't have. The rear 1/4 creases is one of those 82/83 only things.

Re: anyone else bugged by the difference between the front/rear fender flares??
dude....I warned you haha.
thanks for the tip on the 82-83 quarters, but i checked a couple pics out and they seem to have the same problem, are they original or a replacement quarter that has sharpened edges? maybe the pics just don't show it well.
also i was thinking more along the lines of modifying mine instead of buying whole new quarters, don't know much about body work though

Re: anyone else bugged by the difference between the front/rear fender flares??
anyone also notice that the rear fenders have a little ridge in the corner of the fender flares where it rolls under ..
and the fronts dont ..
and the fronts dont ..
Re: anyone else bugged by the difference between the front/rear fender flares??
The 82 and 83 factory 1/4s have the sharp crisp line. The 84-92 factory 1/4s have a more rounded appearance. If an 82 or 83 has the rounded look, it's a replacement 1/4. Not sure how the aftermarket is making these, but aftermarket replacement could be sharp or rounded. I'm referring only to factory lines in my above post.

ahh, i see. thanks for elaborating on that scott, i may have to hack up a junk factory 82-83 shell now just cuz mine bugs the hell out of me!!
and yes adrian i noticed the ridge as well, that i figure i can fix, or maybe I won't have to if the 82-83 ones are clean of it. but you may have just given poor resinlake something else to ruin his day

is it possible that some of the 84s got the sharp edge to? because mine is a nice sharp edge like the front
maybe they changed somewhere during the 84 model year?

OK...
#1 How in the eff did you notice that? I had to go and look and sure enough crisp front, smooth rear. Do I care? Not in the least. Let me say one thing, I love my car and am a huge fan of the third gens but, its a freakin CAMARO, not a caddy... deal with it!
I agree, shear laziness on GMs part. It could have been pressed to match, or if not, make the front match the rear, at least they'd be the same but like I said, not a big deal to me.

Soon, they'll be plenty of GM workers who will be glad to try and fix that for ya for a paycheck.
I've noticed it, but it doesn't bother me as much as not having a good cupholder!

Re: anyone else bugged by the difference between the front/rear fender flares??
haha, its ok, doesn't ruin my day. The devil's in the details though. My cars going to be for auto-x and track days at the glen while in NY and basically back road terror. The outsides a nice luxo blue yea, but inside is metal, satin black front to back. Doors are being panned and sprayed in satin black as well. Getting ready to go out and clear my hood again, I think that's 6 or 7 coats of clear now with the graphics. haha, better not chip or flake... I'll have to airbrush some more
I worked at Delphi, Yes I did see a lot I wish I had the power to change as far as attitudes, and process but it was not within my reach at the time. I worked as hard as I could, I put in the overtime and a lot of sweat. Accuracy and quality of product was paramount to us. To hear that a part was bad went to heart. Hey I'm 24, I'm an American, I drive American, if I can buy American I try to even if it costs more. Didnt know much about cars, but built mine from the rims up with 2 books, thirdgen.org and just asking some questions and a lot of searching. Love Camaros

I'm glad to see that this was a factory thing. I noticed it a while ago on mine and thought someone just did bad body work.

Two thumbs up!
Being Canadian I sort of embrace the whole North American thing. And I put my money were my mouth is. I'll spend more to get local goods.

I don't know what the big deal is.....are you saying the that rear 1/4s and front fenders have to be the same?
Lots of cars don't have them the same
I think the body lines on Firebirds and Camaros are perfect...not a bad angle anywhere

Re: anyone else bugged by the difference between the front/rear fender flares??
I love how this thread is split between owners who embrace the good old GM build quality quirks and the ones who have a touch of OCD (myself being one).
To clarify, the original question is about the crisp/sharp front fender flares and the rounded rears. The double lip thing came up from one of the posts. It's annoying too but not as bad (for me at least) as the round vs. crisp edges.
but I'm still waiting to find someone who's actually FIXED this! as in modified theirs or patched in 82-83 quarters. I might have to be the first one....

To be honest, it should be a very easy fix. As long as both pieces are good thick metal and you can weld somewhat. The probelm comes with the bondo work and then you have to get the car painted. And with as OCD
as you seem, you would probably have to repaint the whole car so it is perfect... but if you are wanting a respray, do it for sure, the patch in should be pretty easy. Let us know if you try it...
Re: anyone else bugged by the difference between the front/rear fender flares??
I noticed years ago that my 83 has a rounded crease on the left 1/4, but the right side 1/4 has a sharp crease, although not as sharp as the front fenders.
I bought the car new and all the corners are still factory.
My car is a late 83. I wonder if the left 1/4 is an 84-92 style like Scott referred to.
I had forgotten all about this!
However, I won't be worried about trying to get them both the same when it's time for body work and repaint. 90% of the time, you only look at one side at a time. To me, it's too small of a thing to notice.

okfoz and I saw an 83 in Indy that had 1 of each rear quarter also. We just assumed the car had some body work done. This is the purpose behind documenting this stuff. At some point, we'll all know what to look for as accurate.

dang you people.....at some point I somewhat felt like something was different on the front fender flares from the rear quarter flares(when I was staring at my car a good while), I could never quite place what was off till now, now its going to glare at me and nag at the back of my mind, lol......
