INSTALLING POWER MIRRORS

I installed Power Mirrors on my 90 RS and wrote myself an instruction list and thought it might be helpful. Then I made it into an instruction list so that others could follow it, if they wanted to. My RS had power door locks and power windows but I did not hook into them, I followed the factory wiring diagram instead.

READ IT ALL FIRST

In 1990 I bought my wife a new RS Camaro, and I refused to sell it. It did not come with power mirrors, so I decided to put them on. Here is how I did it, in case you are interested.

I bought a 1989 Camaro switch and a set of 87 IROC power mirrors. They all match up and were not expensive.

The Switch has 8 color coded wires. They are orange, black, yellow, blue, and green, white, white with a black stripe and green with a black stripe. Below is how they are connected to the mirrors.

The Mirrors come with 4 wires each, and the right one had green with a black stripe, white with a black stripe, blue with a black stripe and yellow with a black stripe.

The left mirror was the same, but no black stripe.

EVENTUALLY SOMEONE IS GOINT TO SAY THAT I AM CONNECTING STRIPE WIRES TO THE SOLID SIDE OF THE SWITCH AND THE SOLID WIRES TO THE STRIPED SIDE OF THE SWITCH! But I did not make the darn thing; it’s just the way I got it so it’s how I made it work. Even the GM wiring diagrams say either or for the colors, so someone must have seen it and said “Oups” when they saw that at times one side was solid and at other times it had a black stripe. It is not a mistake Honda or Toyota makes, which is why GM and other America manufacturers are in such trouble.

MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH

Orange is hot and goes to the 20 amp left side of fuse box. You already have it so make use of it.

Black is ground and make sure it a good one. I like to find a good ground and then run the wire up into the driver’s side door.

Blue has to go to both switches. Use a "Splice Connector”. It is a tube where you put a wire into one end and can put two or more wires into the other end. Get at Pepboys.

Yellow has to go to both switches, so use the splice connector.

Green with a black stripe goes to the left hand mirror on my car.

White with the black stripe goes to the left hand mirror on my car.

Solid green go to the right hand mirror on my car.
Solid white go to the right hand mirror on my car.

I use connector for everything, and I start in the middle and work my way out. Where possible I use the same colors as the wiring harness for the part I am installing.

Always make a wiring diagram and leave a copy in each door and a copy with the fuses.

Label the wire that goes into the fuse box.

Bundle the wires you are adding with ties, not with the other bundle, so you will always know they are not original and they will not slop around. Then you can add tie your new wires into the factory bundle to keep it all snug. NEVER tape them together or you lose which ones you added and you might use a color wire that is part of the original bundle with your add on and the tape will make it hard to see which is which.

You will need to string 4 long wires under the dash. They will be yellow, light blue, green and white, if you can find them. Give yourself 10 feel at least. I think it is 16 gauge.

Use a coat hanger to pull the wire into the doors where the wiring bundle goes. The long wires will have to go through both doors so make them long and cut them down in the end.

I find myself taking things on and off after I put everything together and made sure it works so I took it all apart again, except the wires that went through the doors, and sent the mirrors out to be painted and new glass installed. So I will have to do this twice, including removing door panels and refitting everything again. The fasteners can be gotten for a few dollars at Pepboys.

But that works into new power leather seats, for which I found a new factory harness. I was given a lot of advice on how to make the harness and it would have been easy enough but there was the problem with both seats being hooked together for the factory lumbar support that required hoses running between the two, and for 99.00 it was easier to use new ones. Then new carpet and when the door panels come off I will put in the mirrors and hook up the wires again.

I actually made these instructions for me to follow but thought they might help someone else.

By the way – those darn door panels are a biach to take the top panel off of, so be careful and use the time to buy new water proofing rubber if you need it. There even a video on this board that shows you step by step and compares two different moldings, one is installed on each door. It’s worth watching. But get yourself a trim panel tool, $6.00 at Pepboys and some extra fasteners - $2.00 at Pepboys, and have a lot of fun. The wire coat hanger you get from the closet, unless you are lucky enough to have a wire snake for installing wire in a house, which I happen to have.

Have a Blessed Christmas All
