the look that i want

hi i'm new to the site, also i just bought a 89 camaro rs, a couple months ago and i've been thinking of what i wanted to do with it, first i wanted it to be re-painted a dark red like maroon color, but now i'm really thinking about blacking it out. i mean EVERYTHING black! i haven't seen one 3rd gen yet where every single thing on the car is black and was figuring it might be really cool. i'm thinking a black paint job, with smoked tail-lights, those blackened head-light lense things (idk if you know which ones i'm talking about, they cover the whole headlight frame), tinted windows, black rims, drag slicks on rear and the whole thing lowered. i'm not sure exactly how this will look, but in my head it looks cool as hell i'm not sure about real life. but i decided that i don't necessarily want my car to be "pretty" i'd rather it be quite mean-looking, especially when all my engine work and performance mods are added in addition to the entirely black exterior, i want this thing to roll up to a red-light with a loud ****in cam, deep rumbling exhaust note, and just be sitting there, and when people roll up next to it they don't think "damn thats a nice car" they think more along the lines of "holy ****, thats the scariest looking car i've ever seen, it looks like it wants to murder someone" hahahaha. anyway i dont know ****, i could be wrong, to me this sounds kinda cool but i'd appreciate feedback from more experienced f-body masters, tell me if this just sounds disastrous or if it could be cool like i think. thanks

Build it the way YOU want it. Alot of people build stuff I can't stand but if they like it that's all that matters. Everyone has their own taste.

Personally I wouldn't black everything out. I don't like blacked out lighting.

Re: the look that i want

Age factors into the mean part.
Think of what the cops are going to be thinking when they see a younger person driving a car like that.
Not trying to discorage you. Would be cool, I personally don't like the whole blacked out lights, but the rest I would go for.

The way you worded everything says beginner. Plus I knew you were young when you said you wanted to roll up loud ****ing cam and people say thats the scariest car ever. Very fantasy like...but would be very nice to see.

I just hope you do what your saying you will do. Full black, loud exhaust and lopey cam, maybe even a cutout....what wheels you looking to get? Drag slicks....for what, plan on racing alot. Street car?, just get some nice treads...Nitto's maybe.

How do you plan to lower the car? Beware these cars are considered low already. I myself plan on a 1.6" drop through B&G springs (already seen them installed, will be tucking the wheels easily), which is what I want as I plan on a low stiff ride.

Post what parts you will be using for everything...

P.S. Nothing against you being young...haha, I just turned 21 myself...so it was easy to find another young guy, just wanted to know.

Re: the look that i want

well yeah i am a beginner lol thats probably why i sound like one but camaros have been my favorite car since age 13 when i first got into cars and always wanted one, finally just got one and i'm obsessed with it. i appreciate the advice though and i like to hear feedback because i admit that i don't know much about cars mechanically-wise, always tried to learn on my own but never had anyone teach me and never got the chance to take an autos class or anything like that, so my knowledge is all pretty basic i want to learn though as much as possible. the sooner i can start modifying my car to my liking WITHOUT having to take it to a shop and pay a labor fee for someone else to work on it, the better.

Re: the look that i want

Wow, we have a lot of new and young members on here lately. That's always a good thing to keep the site going and keep the excitement. Black is a good color on Camaros, but I'm another guy that doesn't care for the headlight blackouts. They will get you a lot of negative attention from the Police and will reduce your visibility at night. I think leaving the headlights and taillights alone and having polished rims compliment a gloss black Camaro well.

Re: the look that i want

I'm in the process of doing up my engine and engine bay and am doing it in the same manner as your exterior. Everybody and their dog has chrome everything under the hood. I think having everything black under the hood will be sweet. Headers, air filter cover, valve covers, etc. Everything black and clean will hopefully look as slick as I've envisioned.

Re: the look that i want

oh yeah xflgkingpin, i want to do the rear window louvers as well, i knew i was forgetting something. your car sounds awesome to me, i'm gonna go check the thread right now and see if i can find it. Harwood thats an interesting as hell idea and i don't think i've ever heard of or seen that done before, it would be pretty badass looking. post pics up when you're done. Jtufts, whats different about the 87-89 taillights? i thought all camaros from 82 through 92 have the exact same taillights? unless they're just minor differences and i didnt notice. JeremyNYR, i was thinking about that earlier today of how the lights will be at night, that must reduce visibility a ton! and besides i don't know yet if i actually like that style or not, i'm kinda undecided....lol but attention from police is something i def don't need and you have a point there. i think i'm for sure gonna smoke the rear lights though, to me that looks awesome, maybe not the headlights though.

Re: the look that i want

1. At least here in NY, blackouts are ILLEGAL. I am a registered inspector, and that's one of the things they point out. However, if you find a decent guy in a shop, he'll let it slide. If you do decide to do this, make sure you get the removable covers so you can just pop them off come inspection time, otherwise you will be needing a separate set of tails.
2. Louvers are going to set you back around $300, especially if they are the aluminum ones.
3. I think that a black engine bay with a FEW chrome accents (most of what I've seen is WAY overboard) would look sweet, especially with a little Bright Red thrown in the mix.
But, hey, it's your car, who am I to say what you should do to it? BTW, I was 18 when I bought my Bird, and have been wrenching on her for 5 years now. She's marginally better (and a stick now too!), but I need to sink around another $12K into her to get her where I want her.

Yupperz, thats why Im going with a nice basic silver. Black engine bays would be killer in the sleeper dept., but as far as finding leaks or looking at things at night or something, dont bother trying.

I want to see what a full black engine bay would look like. What about flat blacking parts, this way leaks would show more easily...than lets say gloss black.

Anyway, cant wait...projects are fun.

i personally am not going to do the black engine bay idea, thought i think it sounds cool and encourage you to go for it if thats what you want. i don't want chrome everything either though cuz thats too common/cliche....even though that still looks good. i'm thinking of a metallic red engine bay, i want everything red under the hood...and maybe a LITTLE chrome lol

I agree with everything you say miRob.

Honestly I wouldn't smoke the tailights, it'll **** off alot of drivers. Some guy did the same exact thing your planning and he was driving infront of my father and almost rammed into the back of the rear of the camaro just because it was smoked tailights and he wasn't able to notice it well in the day time. If i haven't said anything about slow down he would of went full into it as he was slowing down and turning.
I'm not a fan of smoked tailights or anything like that, the whole car being black is great and all. Mine is black too i have a 1989 camaro rs thats black. I enjoy my black thick strip rims too with the silver strip. I want to have the whole ideal of making it "louder an more aggressive" sounding. hehe Makes the cops think, "oh sweet another person to pull over" as i drive the speed limit and they ride up my butt waiting for it. it just makes me feel great because it sounds like its going faster than it is in some peoples aspect. hehe well anyways i hope you succeed with your goal. Good luck!

thanks mike, maybe i'll take your advice there, lol i don't want people to be rear-ending me. and yeah i agree with the whole "louder and more agressive" idea to get some attention haha even if its from the cops, what are they gonna do? lol as long as you drive the speed limit........ i tend to have problems with that

Re: the look that i want

I did the same thing to mine, except I didn't black out the rims. Everybody complements me on the way it looks. Mine is satin black, but I had to take the blackout kit off. It wasn't legal. The cops still bother me every chance they get! Around here 3rd gens, especially black 3rd gens, are the Mark of the Beast to cops. LOL Buy the way I'm 33 and I'm fairly a newby myself, so don't feel left out.

If your really going for the street beast idea, why not drop a 454 over in it. There is nothing like the low growl of a big block to frighten and intimidate the ricers. LOL

Re: the look that i want

#1 have fun financing this idea

#2 Those blackout tails are illegal in many states, check your local laws, i had mine attract the attention of our local sheriff who decided to....inform me of the rules.

The drop thing is understandable, but keep in mine any potholes, speed bumps....ridiculously large driveway drops etc, youll scrape...hard. My exhaust scrapes over speed bumps and ive got stock height, plus youll have to either pay a ton in labor or have a blast with our modified struts on the front when you go to change the springs.

Its all fun to plan, but once you have to foot the bill the first time youll wonder wether or not you really want those sweet "mods" its easier to keep it simple, stick with a 350 TPI, my 305 tears it up as it is, put on some nice heads and use a good cam, beef up the rear and do some prom tuning and youll be ahead of the game

screw everything i just said, i've recently thought of a new idea. black is too common for camaros, i'm sick of black and red so f*$# it, i'm gonna paint it a nice baby blue or light sky blue color and have the black rally stripes, and some nice fat rear tires. i just thought of this yesterday envisioning what a 3rd gen would look like in a non-typical color such as purple or light blue or something like that. i don't care what anyone thinks of it, in my head it will look good so i'm gonna do it. black and red are just too stereotype IMHO.

you could go for the 2 tone look, like a highlight color up top such as a red, then blue or a darker coloer below like on the doors and fenders etc, i like the look IMO

I agree with the "don't lower it" crowd. I have stock height and my wheels are 15s rather than stock 14s. I scrape my driveway EVERY time I back out, scrape speed bumps...you name it. At this point, I'm lucky to have a front air dam at all...

sounds like a nice idea and way to think outside the box well my car was painted irish pearl black it looks purple during the day and when sun goes down looks more of a black pearl looks bad *** so a paintjob that can flip flop would be nice

Re: the look that i want

not to **** on your thoughts but it sounds to me that you are going to start spending your money on the "looks" and by doing that you might detour the real inportant components such as suspension; which is a safety factor, 20 year old bushings wont cut it. a tune up is the best thing you could do with a newly bought car. from my experience, black on our cars isnt the best idea, of course if you are young. im 23 i have a black vert in i get pulled over constantly w/out doing stupid ****, but i live in california so that has alot to do with me getting pulled over.

Re: the look that i want

huh? who the hell said i was gonna spend my money on the looks before a tune-up? i'm not smoking crack, i know a 20 yr old car is gonna require a little TLC at first and plus, i plan on upgrading the suspension and building a bit more horsepower into it, maybe even an engine swap, before i EVER decide to spend my money in the looks department. has to be powerful and solid before i waste money on the paint job and such. these are just ideas that probably arent gonna be put into action for at least another year, because i dont have a whole hell of a lot of money right now, but no i am not a moron when it comes to cars just because i'm "only" 20...****.

87transGTA, your trans am looks sick.

1st I Never implied or mentioned moron, and 20 is not far from 23 years so that remark is irrelevant. 2nd, your goals were listed as follow: paint, sleeper then engine mods, and this thread is listed under BODY; I cant read your mind I could only read your post.
This nor the previous reply were meant as an offence and/or attack.
Moving along, there is a site, which has info on l03's and will give you great ideas when it comes to modifying your TBI system

Blackout's are illegal in Illinois. I had them on my 82 Z-28 years ago, bought it that way. I got stopped and ticketed 3 days after I bought that car.
As far as the engine bay goes I think black chrome would look sweet.

Re: the look that i want

i noticed your post when i was looking up info on some street-slicks. pretty often people at street lights and on the freeway get super intimidated by my all black (aside from red interior) '86 Z-28. like, they wont make eye contact with me or dare to cut me off. some people have even been afraid to pull up next to me at stoplights! they'll come beside me, but only close enough so that i can see the hood of their car out the passenger window. i've always wanted to go reallllllly black like supertinting my windows, but the truth is, i already get negative attention from cops wherever i go...

This is because in America we are so afraid of what people might say or do when next to them that we always have to be alone on the road. Think about it, when was the last time you said hey to someone next to you that you didnt know.

Its just like walking through a park or something and when you come up to someone or walk past them you stop talking or lower your voice because subconciously yo dont want them to know what your talking about or what you yourself is about.

Me and my brother were talking about this last night when we were driving next to some one and they kept speeding up, so we'd pull back up and try to stay with them...again pulled away so again we pulled up, then he decided to slow down and turn down another street. Best part was it was a friend of mine. Asked him why he wouldnt stay with us (he didnt know it was us because he didnt want to look over at the person), and said he just didnt want someone riding next to him that can see him driving.

We all do it on a daily basis, lower our voices, tuck away behind cars or dont pull up all the way at red lights, JUST to avoid having to wonder what people think or will say.

Maybe a little overboard but thats why, but then there are people like me who always talk to tohers at a light, what else should I do, I dont care for radio so i talk to my fellow drivers.

So for everyone please talk to that fellow driver, you might make a new friend or even give someone a great day.

P.S. Your car looks good, but dont dig the high third brake light or rear louvers, but it gives the Mad Max effect, which might also be why people are afraid to pull up, I mean come on, all dark, flat, louvered mad max look. **** that im not pulling up...HAHA, thats what I want.
