Wing Doors

I came up with this idea a while ago and thought it would be sweet to make on a third gen f-body. I was watching Pimp My Ride and they made these rear passenger suicide doors that opened with hydraulic and were hinged on the c-pillar. I thought about doing the same thing, but with the a-pillar on one of these cars. My teacher back then told me that the weight of the doors would break the windshield, but what if you hinged it on a roll cage? Would it be worth looking into? Would it be too much work? Would the doors stick or move out too much, making it difficult to park near someone? Thanks.

Haha, just thought the idea of a firebird with actual wing-like doors would be a good idea.

First off, stop watching that awful show. Second, it's not worth looking into.

try that. the a pillar is structural and with the assistance of the strut you should be fine.

Re: Wing Doors

are think those doors are cool as hell lol. just nt on a third gen unless you put some crappy stupid body kit that made it all sleek and dumb lookin. a thirdgen is spose to represent muscle and scare the crap outta people when you mash the gas. its not spose to look like a skyline or rx-7.

Re: Wing Doors

An idea about a body modification to a 3rd gen should never start with " I was watching Pimp My Ride ...".

actually stock third gens are closer to sports cars than muscle cars, but a lot of people build them up for drag racing. To each his own and all that i guess

Since it was designed as a sports car to compete with the likes of the Porsche 944 etc., the factory look is already "sleek" (not sure how that relates to dumb? or maybe that's about body kits ha) which can be amplified if that is the look you're going for. However, IMO watching pimp my ride is a poor place to start if you plan on doing so

keep it stock or check out a pre-engineered kit such as the one Udamon mentioned....much less of a PITA

Re: Wing Doors

I only watch Pimp My Ride for custom car ideas, same with Monster Garage. All these people out here have those "custom" cars they most likely didn't make and none of them are really any different. A body kit, some lights, some sound, pimp my ride gives you ideas on what to do with say hydraulics and **** like that.

yeah... hydraulics aren't too popular on this site either. It's just a different niche in customizing that you'll find here than you would on Pimp My Ride. As for Monster Garage ... most people here will think what they do on that show is cool, but the things they do on there wouldn't work out well when applied to 3rd gens.
