So i have finally decided to ditch the ghetto broom handle that holds up my trunk because the truck arms are shot. Has anyone had to replace these? if so how hard is it to do? is there a specific replacement brand i should use or a certain size? any help would make my life easier

its not hard at all, you just need some torx sockets. and hatch shocks...

 

Make sure you have someone help....other wise the broomstick might fall and dent your damn quarter or something Yes this happened to me while replacing hood struts today.

 

yeah i was cleaning my carpet and my stupid pcv pipe slipped and that heavy *** hatch fell on my frieken head. suckers heavy, make sure your careful

 

I have a brand new pair to put on so if someone in the area really needed a set. I would give up mine that are on now ( work well except on colder days, then they need a little hand but the stay up) all I ask in return is that you motivate me to put the new ones on.

 

I replaced my hood struts last year. My car is original so I wanted to get original struts. I went to Napa and bought a pair. They installed very easily and work great.

 

oh i could def replace my struts, i just dont wanna pay the 30 bucks for it. the pvc pipe is free and im only in the trunk maybe 1 or 2 times every couple weeks anyway?? its not a big deal to me, just gotta make sure the damn this is held up good lol

 

I posted in another thread about this but can't remember whereso here we go again . Just go get a tool from Cornwell Tools or another supplier . It is made to hold hoods/hatches open for safety purposes instead of a stick style prop and costs around $10 and is small enough to fit in your pocket . You just clamp it in place and you don't have to worry about your hood or hatch falling on you and it is out of your way . For anyone who even has good hood/hatch struts I would recomend this for safety purposes also . It may not look like much but it holds my hatch open and we all know how heavy they are . If anyone is interested just find a major tool supplier like Cornwell , Mac , Matco , or Snapon and get you one like I said before there only about $10 or so . I'll post a picture of it later .

 

spend the money - nothing like lifting the hood and it stays there. its ony 24.00 for both of them - you get them from pepboys cheap.

 

ha this is the first thing I did on my car, except i used a pair from the parts car 10 ft away. I ended up replacing them both w/ new ones a year later (one exploded on the way home from the body shop and got oil on my car).

No need to buy a tool. Put a vice grip in place on the one you aren't take out, and then take the other one out. 10min job.

 

Here's the pictures I promissed . And the one with my hand is to show how small this is . As far as hatch struts go I don't see spending $60 for something I don't open very often . Now as far as hood struts I put new ones on when they go because I get under the hood more than opening the hatch and hood struts for a pair is cheaper than one hatch strut .

 

definitely get someone or something to hold that hatch up. I made the mistake of trying to do both while in the car and that glass is heavy when it hits you. Get a friend, get a broomstick, anything. Otherwise, the job take a half hour tops to do both and you'll be glad you did.

 

If you do change the struts you can use the vicegrips if you get them tight enough to hold and not slip but definetly do not put the vicegrips on the new struts because you could damage them . If you want to change them and once you get one on and want to make sure it doesn't fall use the tool I talked about it will not damage the new strut .
