hood blisters

hood blisters
Well, I ordered my new repro hood blisters from the hawks yesterday. Just debating, blisters body color, or black? Anybody have pics of their car with hood blisters black instead of body color?

Re: hood blisters
i think it would depend on the color of your car. if your GFX or a seperate color than the car, you may even consider painting them the secondary color as i have on my 92. post a pic of your car so we can see body and wheel color and get a better idea of what it'd look like.

Re: hood blisters
I vote for body color. I also put these blisters on my car and am very happy with the results. They needed a lot of sanding and even a little bit of reinforcing on the back, but I'm happy with the final look.

Re: hood blisters
I did get the ones off Hawks. I'm not sure if they are the 'new ones' or not? Here are 2 progress pics, and one final picture of what they look like. I went all out when I did them as you can see from the pictures.
One thing I did, which I would recommend is I used a flexable filler to mold the blisters onto the hood. There is still a distinct line between the hood and the blisters, but i wanted to help eliminate any water that could potentially get under them. Since they are not factory fit, I didn't trust the seal and didn't want my hood to rot from the inside. I also drilled a larger hole in the hood under the blisters in case any water ever got in there, it could drain out. (which you can see in the first picture)
Hawks is great, and their customer service is wonderful... the only issue I had was they were not perfectly formed to the hood. I had to sand the edges down quite a bit to make them fit properly. also the tops of the blisters were a little rough but a bit of sanding and they were good. overall a great product and I'm VERY happy with the result. the flat hood is just too boring for me
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. it isn't difficult but takes some time.

Yeah that looks pretty damn good. And I have the same problem, flat hood bores me way too much lol. My dad's got a guy with a body shop and he's going to do them for me under the table for pretty cheap. Hopefully he puts in the time and effort it sounds like you did, and yeah looks awesome, thank you

I would have liked to see them painted black just because I'm thinking of painting mine... You did a nice job though.

Why does everyone call these things Blisters? They are not blisters..they are louvers.
Blister conotes an ugly image. A pus filled lumpy skin condition.

Re: hood blisters
I bought my car with flat black blisters on it. I don't know if it originally came like this or not, it's a 1991 Z28. I didn't like the black blisters, when I had the car painted, I made them body color, and painted the fake grilles in them black.
In my opinion, they look much better body color.
The black blisters made it look like an IROC, it seemed to confuse a lot of people, including me, I still can't figure out for sure if it was original like that. You can see some photos of my car before I tore it apart at my fquick page (see sig.) with the black blisters.
I'll try to get the newly painted blisters up for comparison (they are not on the hood yet though).

Re: hood blisters
Thanks for posting a pic... I think the black blisters look good as long as the eyelids are black and the side mirrors are black also... It kinda gives the car a different profile...

Re: hood blisters
thank you sporty, and i must say the black looks great in your car 82roc, starting to think that because of the dark green i should probly go body colour, just because the colour is dark to begin with.

Re: hood blisters
I have a flat hood and I was wondering how you guys lined up the blisters for installation ? In other words, how did you know where to put them ?
One more question, I was going to buy them from Hawks, but if I can get OEM for just a little more money, would that be a better way to go ?

As for color...I say body color or stripe color, if a car has stripes.

Re: hood blisters
I'm sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I have a flat RS hood with no indentions. The Hawks after market blisters are usable on this type hood. I just wondered how you place them properly and drill the holes to mount.

The inner shell out our hoods is the same on all camaros, whether it be a flat hood or IROC hood. Remove your hood insulation and you will be able to see the impression of where the blisters should go. I removed my hood from the car, as you can see in the previous pictures to make measuring easier. The Hawks blisters are the same size, so simply measure the underside of the hood and transfer it onto the top of the hood. be sure to center them, get the right spacing in the middle and the right distance from the front and back of the hood. I have a bunch of pictures of this that I can post tonight after work if you need. Just make sure you measure about 10 times, before you drill!!
As for the OEM blisters... These only work with an IROC or Z-28 hood. The mounting studs are designed to sit into the indent on the hood making them sit too high on a flat hood.... i almost made this same mistake, they don't work!
Let me know if you want me to post pictures tonight...

Re: hood blisters
TPI-RS, thank you very much. That was exactly what I needed to know.
Especially thanks for the heads up on the OEM parts. I had a suspicion that since they normally sit in the indents, they would sit too high on mine.
If you don't mind, pics would be great.

Re: hood blisters
Here are the pictures of the progress. You will see we used a level as a straight edge as well as some simple masking tape, a pencil, etc...There are also pictures of sanding and getting everything all ready for paint. Notice the back of the hood, which has the 'indents' for the blisters already in it.
Sorry this has to be in so many posts, but I can only do 3 pics at a time... so here goes
