My wheel project

So far I had A few ideas and this is the one that looked better.
Only the 2 rear wheels done so far.
The process takes long but in the end I think it's worth it.

The original wheel was white. I scuffed it using steel wool, then I painted it Gloss Black - Rustoleum High Heat, let it dry overnight and put a clear coat.

Re: My wheel project

That would look cool too but the high heat paint that I used onley comes in black.

I might be redoing the wheels at some point anyway to make the star and lip red since I'm gonna paint the whole car red in a few weeks whenever it stops raining on my days off.

Re: My wheel project

I was planning on doing this same thing with the Camaro wheels on my Firebird, a different color of course.
What did you do to polish the lip and star? I mean paint must have gotten on there, what did you use to get the paint off and make it shine?

Re: My wheel project

I did same idea to my iroc wheels....used buffer wheel and mothers aluminum polish to buff out to a mirror, but I had mine powdercoated black instead of paint

I used a wire wheel on a cordless drill to remove the silver coating then I put regular masking tape while I painted the other parts black.

I then removed the tape and sprayed the wheel with Rustoleum Clear Coat.

I also used Ice polish on the whole wheel and wiped it with a microfiber towel.

Re: My wheel project

Really? How did you mask the star? that's such a thin area, thicker than a strip of masking tape..
And what silver coating are you talking about?

I masked it with regular masking tape and used a razor blade to trim the edge of the star and for the lip I cut the masking tape in half to be able to curve the tape and make a fine edge.

I don't know exactly what the silver stuff was but it did chip.

Re: My wheel project

ive considered using a brake caliper paint. not sure if it would be tougher or not. maybe you could bake the wheels? can you bake these wheels?? not sure if theyre cast iron or steel. id think steel, but hell i dont know.

Re: My wheel project

Hmm, Thats a really good idea, Guess I know how I'll be doing my project when it comes time. Only problem is I bet I'll be hard pressed to find gold paint that's made to stand up to the elements. But I guess as long as I give it a good clear coat It'll be fine

Re: My wheel project

Nice job! I did the same to a set of those that were red. I needed something for the winter on my purple 92 and red wouldn't do it, so I stripped the red off and repainted them black with brake caliper paint. I left the machined surfaces bare though.

Yeah, I left mine bare metal also and put a clear coat on the whole wheel.
By the way, nice dolphins. I'm Surface all the way.

K-Slice, as far as gold paint goes it will be hard to find but the wheels don't really get that hot to need high heat paint.
