Re: Saving a 1987 Formula from the Junkyard - Restoration
Wow, has it really been THAT long since I've posted about this?
My time has been taken up with an 88 IROC convertible that I couldn't pass up.
Anyway, not much has really happened since my last post. I got the hood on, found an exhaust, its about 3" flowmaster with chrome tips, I got a tranny cooler hooked up, a tranny dipstick hooked up, dizzy popped in, but I still havent even started the engine, which kind of urks me. All I need to to to get it to "drive" is:
-Hook up / Bleed brakes
-Time the dizzy
-Tune the carb
-Wire the fan
-Fill fluids
-Set valve Lash
-and any other "adjustments"
I guess the reason I havent tackled the whole "valve lash, and timing thing is, because I have never done that before. All I have done is read up on it, and watch some youtube vids just to let me know what all goes into it, and honestly, it doesnt seem that hard. I could probably finish this car up in a couple days. I just need to get the motivation, and finally tackle this thing and roast some tires.
Thanks for the interest, by the way.

Well the brakes are bled on the project 86/91. I still got to put the engine and trans in on mine so you are a head of me.

Re: Saving a 1987 Formula from the Junkyard - Restoration
Thanks guys, I like the blue too, I figured even though the motor is a chevy, the car is a firebird, and should have a little pontiac touch. A few days ago I had a buddy come over and he adjusted the timing, and roughly set the valve lash, and we managed to get her fired up, and it sounds like a beast, real deep, hollow, lumpy exhaust note. All it really needs to technically "drive" is the engine dialed in, check to make sure the cooling/chargine/fuel delivery systems are good, and hook up/bleed the brakes.
Theres still a "small" list of other things that need to be done, but those are the major driveline issues.

I thought I would, but all I had to do was pay the guy a fee, and I got a clean title in the mail in about 2 weeks. Went smooth.

Oh that's good; always a shame to see cars to go waste as a result of a missing piece of paper... lovely government bureaucracy lol.

Especially when that piece of paper apparently doesn't mean anything either. I bought a camaro off a guy last week and he gave me the title and then trailered the car off! I titled the car in my name so I legally own it but since I never "took possession" of the car its NOT THEFT.

wtf?! did you already pay for the car?

Yep, I gave him $500 and told him I'd be right back for the car. Went to get the wrecker and came back and it was gone. His cell phone had been disconnected, too. The new title came in the mail yesterday. Too bad its basically just as worthless as any other piece of paper.

And any updates on this formula?

Not really any updates on the car, but I have been thinking about stripping the parts and swapping to my convertible. I know that doesnt seem to make much sense, but in the end, the convertible is the one I will keep, and I plan on overhauling the driveline / suspension soon anyways.

I talked to the sheriff's dept and they told me I was screwed. I called around to junkyards today and he tried to sell them the car but since they won't accept cars without titles anymore they wouldn't take it!! So its still F'IN LOOOOOST
I bought a new one today though lol I don't think I'll be getting this one back

I don't want it junked, I want it saved, but I dont feel like hunting down all of the same stuff to do all over again, when I have it all right here. I also dont feel like having 2 cars registered at the same time, cant drive them both at the same time. I've just been thinking about what I am going to do. Nothings' in stone yet,

Well I'm calling the State Police in the morning and seeing what they have to say about it. I also went to the county clerks office and filed to take him to court for small claims for $650 cause of the $500 for the car and the $150 I spent for the tow truck bill.
Anywho I think I'd fix up the vert, too. Verts are awesome
