Por 15 no prep

I have been using some por 15 and its been working fine. But the thing is I'm running out of the metal ready that comes with it. I was hoping some one that uses this stuff regularly can tell me if i really need the metal ready or not? And if so what else can I use so I can just run to auto zone and pick it up there. Thanks

I've used POR15 with good success. It will stick as long as you are applying it over a rough surface. A smooth painted surface will not adhere. Rusted, blasted metal, or scuffed paint will take POR15. I did the whole bottom of my TA with the stuff after I fixed the floors (car sat under a tree in weeds for 2 years)

Did you just use the paint or did you use the metal ready that it says you should use too.

Re: Por 15 no prep

you dont neccessarily need the metal ready on metal that already has rust or is freshly sandblasted. If it has surface rust, then make sure all the loose stuff is wire wheeled off.
The metal ready is more important if there is some stray paint or stainless steel present and absolutely necessary on any unpainted fresh (not thouroughly rusted) metal.
The cleaner is very important as well. it must be fully degreased and silicon free. the marine clean stuff is best because it leaves no residue, but i have used the "super clean" stuff too, just dilute it more.
I would reccomend getting some more metal ready if possible, unless its over fresh sandblasting. every little advantage helps. My local carquest now carries POR15 and all the prep stuff too.

I've done both... tried the metal ready and also just applied it. The metal ready etches anything, smooth or not. It makes the por15 stick like glue. Without I had varying luck. On rusty surfaces, and just rough parts, it worked pretty good. Just dont paint it on painted surfaces, or polished, cause it will flake off.
