rear hatch wont come back up

did a few searches but i havent figured it out yet.

i have a 1992 camaro rs. the rear hatch motor spun itself to the bottom and wont come back up. the hatch itself isnt closed/locked down. the rear light is off but comes on when i hit the switch. before this happened, hitting the switch would cause the motor to go up and down as long as the switch was held down. then the motor spun down and stayed there. when i press the switch now, it wants to keep going down.

i have taken off the cover to look at the whole latch mechanism. i have also tried fiddling with the little levers but i wanted to ask you guys since i bet one of you guys has the answer. thanks

You stick your finger down and press the switch to manually make it come up (don't worry nothing in there to bite your finger). If that dose not work the plastic gear is stripped and needs replacing.

ya i have tried doing that but there is no response. i have done it in the past and it worked then. if the gear was stripped would the motor still turn?

Yes, at least you know the motor works.

Might be a good idea to replace the slides with new nylon slides also. Download the repair instructions from TDS, they are very helpful.

Re: rear hatch wont come back up

i took the whole thing off and mostly apart. the plastic gear nut looks fine. i did find a spring and lever that fell off the backside of the plate that moves up and down. if i can figure out how it get it back on then that should fix the problem. however i cant seem to do that, anyone ever had to deal with this? the spring and lever are directly behind the part that unlocks the hatch when you turn the key.

also i could only find tds directions for earlier model year hatch pulldowns.

the spring and lever that fell off - it engages this thing in the picture.

Re: rear hatch wont come back up

If the spring & lever are missing the latch won't release. It will cycle up then back down again.

Re: rear hatch wont come back up

hey lon
the spring and lever fell off but they landed right next to it so i still have the pieces. i just cant seem to put them back on properly. it feels like an easy fix but the spring keeps coming loose and isnt bracing the lever against circular plastic piece.

Re: rear hatch wont come back up

I've only repaired one once for this condition. As I recall there is a small push nut that holds on the lever. I'll have to grab one from my collection tomorrow to look at it.
