Re: The ULTIMATE budget paint job (pic heavy)
Wow! I actually read every response. I paid someone $$$thousands$$$ to paint my Z28to only find runs in the paint when I decided to remove the door rub guards, cracked clearcoat on the hood louver area, and rust spots are coming back 7 years later. Now I have the Z28 to repaint in a couple of years, and my wife's '85 T/A needs a paint job bad (lots of surface rust). To pay a pro to do both cars would cost as much as buying a new car - quite depressing - you guys have proved what I had told my wife. That I can paint the cars at home with my 33gal compressor and save a ton of money. I knew they did it on the weekend TV shows, but you guys aren't pros and your cars look awesome! We love cruisin' in nice cars, and now I know I won't have to repeat the same financial mistake again. I don't care about perfection, we just want nice quality paint on our cars. THANKS!!!

We used this same technique today on my dad's S-10. He's been painting like this for his budget builds for years. I'll post some pics after we wet sand and buff it out but it looks pretty good so far.

What I wanna know, is where did FYRCHKN get those bad *** looking tail lights? The grid is round in them, looks cool as hell! Awesome job on the car too.

Re: The ULTIMATE budget paint job (pic heavy)
I didn't use Valspar, keep that in mind... and yes.... Those where the instructions. A 2nd coat was not to be applied and if so, only after the 1st was fully hardened.
but look... Here is the car after I sanded it back down again w. 1000 grit.
I applied some filler and sanded the car down 1 more time. Below is a video of the last time I painted... This time around I ignored the instructions and adjusted the spray pattern as wide as it would go @ 70psi and put down 1 light layer, waited 20 min then a med layer...
The paint came out MUCH better, w/o any runs and less peel. I painted under the hood too this time, but I missed a few places.
FYI:
light layer - 0-25% overlap between strokes (tacking coat, dose not always cover whole surface)
med layer - 50% overlap
heavy layer - 50% ++
(uploading video)

Well we finally finished my dad's S-10. Keep in mind this is a work truck and wasn't meant to look amazingly nice or anything.
This is what the entire truck looked like when we started:
This is it about 24 hours after we finished it (2 days ago):

they are the black version of the crystal clear H4 projector headlights... they are super cheap (got mine for $3 each + $20 shipping lol). They look cool but are more "projector style", true projectors cost more...
but they are still about as good as stock.

Re: The ULTIMATE budget paint job (pic heavy)
i plan on painting my truck in a similar manner with some tractor enamal one of these days. its in no means a show truck and gonna get beat on regularly. ive almost finished the respray on my camaro using the "right" paint and it cost a lot more than the cheap tractor paint.
on a side note Blakecharles, youre gonna hate those lights, they SUCK. youre better off taping flashlights to the hood. youll probably get better light output that way.

86Blackbetty - your results came out real good. I might attempt this myself this winter break, actually. Definitely thinking about it. For the money, you really can't go wrong..
and just for reference: I spent $200 on a QUART of good paint, good clear, and hardeners for my SS wheels. To paint a whole car for lots less than that is a big deal.

Re: The ULTIMATE budget paint job (pic heavy)
Hey guys i just ordered a kit for 80 bucks, comes with 1 gal metallic black paint thinner and hardner, its automotive paint, and comes in enamel, urethane and base coat clear coat, has anyone ever used this paint before? they have around 25 colours to choose from and looks like a good deal, the testimonials look awesome, i ordered that kit with a gallon of primer for 31bucks and shipped straight to my door, total is 140, here is the link if anyone is interested, i cant say how good the paint is, but if there is any interest once i get my truck done i will post before and after pics. http://www.paintforcars.com/acrylic_...aint_kits.html

Those kits are all single stage, not bc/cc. Just fyi. But $80 for a gallon of single stage is about average.

Re: The ULTIMATE budget paint job (pic heavy)
posted wrong link, somewhere on the site they got bc/cc for around 160 cant remember, but yeah, just incase someone is looking for a metallic or sweet color other than what tractor paint has to offer, not that it looks bad at all.

I'm really digging their super gloss jet black paint kit. What primer would I need exactly? or be best for me?

2k epoxy would be best. id get a black primer since you want a black top coat.

I emphesize the atomizing greatly! Or you will be working your arm to muscle failer rubbing off that orange peel effect...I'm sure there's some that can shoot that paint on there smooth like a babies booty...but if it ain't you, start with an 800 grade paper and wet the surface and rub it smooth, pregressively increase the grit to 900, 1000, 2000, 3000 then buff it, you'll be able to see next year when you finish

I really don't see the big issue on primer, some say some does better then others but I used regular ol rustoleum from lowes or home depo and it worked fine...but I like to contrast the colors jus so I can be certain that I cover the car evenly and fully

Re: The ULTIMATE budget paint job (pic heavy)
the rustolem primer has a tendancy to lift off the surface causing the paint on top to lift off and flake too. usually takes a few months to a year before youll see the effects.

Just wondering hows every ones paint jobs holding up? You guys did an amazing job.
I know I'm not the only one wondering how the paint is holding up.
How about a update. I am looking for someone to do a paint job for me in my area, just don't want to pay a arm & leg for it. Any one in the Tucson / PHX area that has done this type paint job???

Looks like I just figured out the method I'll use on my 88 IROC parts car. Awesome.

did you think the thread would go this far?? People make reference to this thread on other sites. you deff inspired me to paint my car (up until I saw this thread I never tried to). It's cheap enough for anyone to learn by spraying some junk panels or sheet metal.
Hell even if you wanted to rattlecan your whole car, this tractor paint will hold up faaaar better then anything else!

I used the generic SPI clear coat, you will not find a higher quality clear coat in this price range I PROMISE YOU THAT! (they are a sponsor at chevelle tech and those guys swear by it)

SummitRacing also has a cheap clear that works nice too

Thanks to FYRCHKN once again. Finally did my body work and paint job. Used gloss white tractor paint. Also the purple gun with the gravity fed paint and a tiny 125 psi air compressor.Heres my thread

It looks ok but look at my thread for the piles of body damage..
