Re: Got hit by a 80's chevy dumpbody

Yea if you got the money. The frame may be twisted however which would be no bueno. Like Iroc_U said, the money it may cost to fix it may be better off buying a new one and parting out the old one.

Ouch

Unless it has some special significance to you, (Like your first car or something) I think you're going to be better off just starting out with a new car, and taking the good stuff off this one and swapping it over.

To be honest, it's trashed. Looks like the unibody is bent really badly. Strip it of any useful parts, and get another one.

totally agree. that car is done. i hit a telephone pole fell asleep driving at 55mph. cost 10k fix it got fixed. but yours looks like far more damage in worse places than what i did to my 86 formula. getting hit from the side is usually done for a car. find a new one and part out yours. least you got a lot of spares now.

and yeah get a firebird!!

sounds like its going to be on the other guys dime, soooo i would collect on insurance, buy it back, strip it (that is if its a really good car), then scrap it, take the money from the insurance and scrap yard, buy you another one, (even a v6) place parts from your wrecked one on "new" one

I have to agree with others to buy a new camaro and strip this one.
I had a 92 camaro that was my first car but my brother wrecked it for me. I later bought a 84 camaro and use some parts from my 92 to my 84
To bad to see another camaro be wreck

Darn shame. At least you will have parts for another one if you decide to get another one. Yea the Frame looks trashed. I wouldn't even bother trying to fix it.

Re: Got hit by a 80's chevy dumpbody

I was told my car was done for and to part it out but it really is significant to me. Similar t-bone accident scene to yours however my fender / a-pillar / door took the brunt whereas on your car the LH strut tower looks like it is the real trouble spot. In fact looking at the pics that might be fine, but susp. damage is obvious too.

For those who doubt, before and after pics of my car, just got her back on the road this week:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/nort...es-things.html

Anything is possible, question is, is it worth it to you and what is your budget? I pray the ins. company helps you, I received 0 help

No need to take it off. Christ, the top of the inner fender looks like it's resting against the manifold (exhaust AND intake). No saving this one.

Re: Got hit by a 80's chevy dumpbody

Yea, this car is way done. Not only did it trash the main structure of the car up front, but the suspension on the left side for sure, but probably the right side as well, since the rack got slammed into, is damaged more than you are probably expecting until a full inspection happens. I would bet the upper and lower control arms are trashed, strut tower, strut, wheel, tie rod ends, and rack are messed up...and that's just suspension...forgetting the obvious cost of the body/frame/structure damage. It sucks bad, but that car is pretty bad. I hope he has insurance and you don't get screwed on this one...but it will most definitely be totaled by them. Try and find another clean one and swap all the best parts between the two to make an even better one car if you can. That's my 2 cents anyway.

Sorry to see this though for sure...hope you're ok. The neck and back tend to get sore a few days after an incident...not right away. Just make sure you're ok and get any medical compensation for neck/back pain taken care of now too. I know too many people that have been screwed out of their medical rights in accidents.

you can get a shell for so cheap, just start over after collecting on it. you can't straighten a unibody that messed up without 10 thousand dollars.

ok well first of all i dont like firebirds. check this out i got the nose off to assess the damage. the motor is untouched. and a dude from a body shop said we would put that on a frame puller and then chop the front subframe. weld on a new one and be set. but yea this was my first iroc. and i spent alot of money fixing this car.....

Re: Got hit by a 80's chevy dumpbody

Man im sorry for our loss. I know how you feel about your first iroc and all that. My firebird is my first fbody and im hoping to keep it for a long time. I have some underbody rust issues tho.

As for fixing it....eh it CAN be done...ive seen people take multiple cars and make a custom rod out of it so anything is possible. It looks like the steering and frame on that side is all messed up tho man. Idk honestly its gonna hurt but I think you should just buy a new one. The repairs and paint will be more then it would be to find a new one with low miles with everything you already had done to yours. Deals come up all the time. Its just a matter of time.

About those bolts coming out....haha...it always comes apart easy. I got hit head on and fixed it then smoked a deer at 70(96 buick skylark not the firebird lol) and both times the panels and everything came apart EASY. Hardest part was getting everything back together and make it look like factory. Fixing a wrecked car is an art form, and not one im good at.

Either way good luck man. If you fix it, more power to ya. If you scrap it, I hope you find a new and better one.

Something to laugh about...at least you got hit by the same era! One 80's vehicle taking out another. At least it wasnt some crappy new plastic honda lol.

Fixable? - Possibly. If you have DEEP pockets.
Worth it? - No. You'll spend WAY more than what it would cost to replace.

Sorry to see another Camaro head off to 3rd gen heaven.

I think you're poll question should ask . . . "Is it worth fixing?", because despite most responding with no, almost anything is repairable if you have a bottomless amount of cash. It's just not always feasible.

Re: Got hit by a 80's chevy dumpbody

haha that may be true. but were going backyard body shop on this b*tch. it wont cost much to find one thats either rotted to death or slammed in the rear to make mine mint again. its looks bad. but the k-member isnt moved at all and everything from the doors back is mint still. the only damage on the car itsself besides the front subframe is on the very corner of the fire wall. and when we pull the radiator support back in place. we will figure out where it needs to be cut and replaced with solid metal. anything is fixable if you figure out a way. and depending on what areas are damaged. like my cars lower a frames are still good. all the steering stuff needed to be replaced anyway. and when it goes back together its getting a strut tower brace and subframe connector.

see it sucks that our thirdgens arent like second gens in that respect. i wish out cars had a bolt on subframe instead of it being spot welded.... oh well cant get everything my way lol

That's the attitude I like to see, don't listen to anyone that tells you to part it out and/or scrap it. Like you said, it's mint from the firewall back. With all respect due, if someone was to junk that car, they're a total idiot.

Good luck with the rebuild, I hope you get her back on the road soon.

If you decide not to fix it than I would take the insurance money and what ever money I could put together and buy a "350" 3rd.gen. Iroc/Z-28 Camaro. At least thats what I would do. We all agree that we need to save as many 3rd. gens as we can from the crusher if possible. Thats what I did with mine. It was a salvage and I saved it from the wrecking yard and she has been one of the most dependable cars Ive ever owned.(Maybe shes grateful).Any way I can understand the bond we have for our cars. Especially the first. We pour our hearts into these cars.

Re: Got hit by a 80's chevy dumpbody

It is totally up to you.

It is way above minor damage.
You may have to put more $$$ than what it would cost for a donor frame or a replacement.

If it was a 1LE,B4C or factory vert or something a bit more rare, the decision would be simpler.

I have a donor frame for my restoral of my 84 TA. I bought it for $300.
It would just cost more to repair damage to the current chassis (mostly rust though)
I am keeping the mechanicals and most of the body, no one will ever know the difference when I am done.
That is me, but as I said it is up to you.

Hope you are happy with the decision you make,
good luck with whatever you decide.

id say just get a new one, and swap parts over even though I hate to say it...thirdgens are pretty easy to come by, and you will save your self a lot of time, money, and stress by getting a new one

Sorry to hear that bro but like how people has said money could fix it but do you have it? What I would recomend trying to find another maro with a good body and engine and swap your interior into your new one.

funny how the part that's damaged is the most replaceable area on the car. At least TRY to fix it. You could pretty much just swap front ends with a donor car if the damage is that bad.

Re: Got hit by a 80's chevy dumpbody

i'd say after dumping a lot of money into the car in the past makes it more of a reason to fix it. if you sell cars/engines you never get back the money you put into it.

plus it'd be nice to tell people, yeah shes fast. and she took a hit from a dumptruck.

unless my car literally burns to the ground *knock on wood* i'm going to fix up mine. and even if it does happen, the thought of "hmm could i?" will cross my mind for a few seconds.

and last. if everyone listened to everyone else that says stuff like

dont bother fixing it, you can go buy a new one
or
dont bother building an engine, you can go buy a crate/one used/already built

then we would have a lot less camaros running around
a lot lest tech articles and threads
or maybe have gone over to the darkside and got a mustang or import

I couldn't agree more. No matter how successful I ever am in life, even if I own BMW's, Ferrari's, or even a Bugatti, my Camaro will always be the favorite.

I really hope he does go through with it and gets it back on the road. There aren't too many nice Third Gens left these days, I'd hate to see it be crushed.
