Question about t-tops

I have a 1992 Firebird with the Lex? plastic t-tops. Were the PPG glass tops an option that you could get back then? I found a new in box GM glass set for '82 through '92 and curious about what came on them stock or if it was an option.

Re: Question about t-tops

Glass wasn't an option in the later models, but the glass ones will fit assuming they aren't the C&C style - as long as they have pins instead of hooks they will fit. The Lexan tops had larger pins, so you might have to get smaller car-side mounts from an earlier car.

These are the pieces I'm referring to - might need smaller ones for the smaller pin diameters of the glass t-tops:

Re: Question about t-tops

Thanks for your help. Yes mine has pins and the tops are in very good shape other than the spotting all in the plastic from age. If I have to change out where the pins go I'll just stick with mine. The glass ones are new in box GM so maybe I'll just buy them and sell on Ebay.

Re: Question about t-tops

You don't have to change the mounts as long as you're using pin style tops. The small and large pin tops both use the same body mounts. The larger plastic pins are spring loaded and retract into the top when latch leaving only the smaller inner metal pin actually latches into the mount.

Re: Question about t-tops

The glass ones have hooks to secure them and mine has pins. The handles are not in the same place either. I think I'm going to stick with my original ones. Thanks for your input!

Re: Question about t-tops

If they have the hook style, then you have an early set. All you need to do is replace the mounts on the A and B pillar of the car. You should be able to locate them in a junk yard or online and they should be cheap. Just a couple screws to remove the existing mounts and install the hook style mount in the same place and you're done. It's a very easy swap if you want the glass.

Re: Question about t-tops

Thanks for your info. I'm debating on whether to do what you said. I havn't bought them yet but a new in box GM glass set is very hard to come by! I could get the parts at a local Pull A Part also.

Re: Question about t-tops

Keep in mind that GM changed the weatherstripping at least once during production between 1986 and 1992. It's possible to force early tops into a later car, and they'll latch but the weatherstripping doesn't come close to sealing correctly. For example, the glass tops from my 87 Iroc wouldn't fit well in my 91 Firebird. If I remember correctly the tops from one would sorta fit in the other, but the other top wouldn't fit the other car.

GM also offered glass as a free charge replacement for the lexan tops if the customer complained during warranty. So there are some glass/plastic interchangable ttops out there, but without test fitting them first you risk getting the wrong weatherstripping.

Re: Question about t-tops

I've took that into consideration also. If I had to get new weather stripping and most likely would that would be another $200-$300. I've decided to keep what I have.

good to know, now what do you do if you need to change the weatherstripping? change the stripping on the '92 to weatherstripping from an '86 to match?

Re: Question about t-tops

I'm keeping my original t-tops and not changing to the glass.
