Finally Getting Somewhere.....

Posted My Camaro in the for sale ads, and stated that I was going to start the bodywork. Got the rear quarters sanded to metal, and was VERY pleased to find out that it was the original basecoat. However, I'm not sure what the PO sprayed over it! Any way, as I was Reducing the Primer, I had put My camera in my shirt Pocket, and Dropped it into the paint Bucket!

Bought NEW Camera, (Set it On the OTHER bench this time)and this morning, proceeded to sand the rest of the Car. It's nice to see this after only 5 hours with a DA Sander & 80 Grit!

Now, I've got to Do all the Plastic, and get it primed & ready to Shoot it the Factory Red. (Some White Rallye Stripes Maybe?)

Uneventful Day.............

Another Slow day at the shop, Put an alternator & Batteries in an Ambulance, at least it paid the bills for today..........Spent the rest of the afternoon pecking at the 'Maro.

Decided to Eliminate the Antenna from the Front fender, got every thing ready just in time to write this, and go to bed. I decided the best thing to do with the Rocker Panel cover, is replace it. I'm this deep in a cherry body, no sense in cutting corners now!

I learned that I Should have done the body work BEFORE I put the engine back in. Even with old blankets wrapped around the engine, it's full of dust!!!!! V-6's have Lots of little "Nooks & Crannies". Gotta clean it daily!

Re: Finally Getting Somewhere.....

RSturbo2800, I want to sand down my car to bare metal I got a couple of sanders but I'm not sure if I can use them, I saw your first post and I looked up DS sanders and they're different compared to the one I have, my sander is the squared look alike sanders no circular motion on those, so if you got any tips on how to start and procedures on how to sand down the vehicle I would really appreciate it

Re: Finally Getting Somewhere.....

It all Depends on how many layers of paint you have to remove, I got lucky, and scored a car that only had the original paint on it, so it was 80 Grit on a DA. You have what I prefer to call a "Hole Digger" (It's actually a "Jitterbug" Sander), It'll work, but you"ll have to start with a#40 Grit paper(On The METAL ONLY!) to remove the paint with any quick progress.

Once I was to metal, worked dents, and filled the antenna hole. All the rubber parts, and plastic, were block-sanded with 80 grit(By Hand), until the scratches were gone. I then Applied bondo to the necessary low spots (Deepest is about 3/16" over the antenna hole), Block-Sanded the area with #40 Grit to almost even wth the surface, then #80, Applied a coat of primer, and block sanded the panel with #180.

Today for me was wet-Sanding with #400 Paper wrapped around a Paint stick, and it took me all day to to get it to even out. all that's left, is wipe it down with Prep-all, and Apply the White for the Rally Stripes, and on to final Paint & Clear.Got any Pics Of Yours????

Nice Car! From the looks of it, it's in a little better shape than mine was(The paint was completely burned up from sitting in the SC Sun ). Thing to remember, when you get a panel done, Primer it before you move on. It's a lot easier to remove a coat of Primer, than to treat rust!

Change of Plans

So, I haven't done much to the body since my last post (The weather has been too cold), I've been concentrating on the "Bottom Line", One of my customers called yesterday for a tow. Seem his kid decided to take his 'Vette for a ride, and forgot what the Steering wheel is for. High curbs and "vettes are not a good mix, and now, it seems, I am the proud owner of a 50K Mile '92 Corvette Engine/Trans Donor!

This Might end up being FUN!!!!!!!
