Re: Just picked up a 1982 Z28 Camaro

That 350 better be pretty nice if you paid that much for the car. It shouldnt be too bad though, as long as you have no rust on the under body.

You will probably need a different hood as that one was a custom job and it looks like its cracking, the interior looks pretty rough too.

But, It should be a good project and ill be following

EDIT: Actully you might be able to get away with some bondo on the hood. That black stuff he used before looks pretty weird though.

That's an 82 Indy pace car interior... Or at least the seats and door panels. It's a bit hard to make out in the pics. If it's a Pace Car, it might make a decent restoration project. I'd be looking for clues that it used to be silver on the upper half and blue on the lower half. If you want to know more, make a thread on the history/restoration forum.

Re: Just picked up a 1982 Z28 Camaro

They aren't really that rare, and they haven't really gained a ton of attention, but it's probably worth restoring. It's something more then just a garden variety 82Z. It'd be fun to show, but annoying to drive everyday. It seems with all the badges the pace cars get a lot of gawking and stupid questions everywhere they go. Either way, you did OK for what you spent.

Re: Just picked up a 1982 Z28 Camaro

These guys are hating on you. They say these cars arent that rare, well i wouldnt say that 6360 mcars out of more than 100,000 camaros are abundant numbers, either way if you decide to sell the car and have a title Id be very interested.they arent very street friendly if its a fuelly car and definitely not a powerhouse when it came with a 305 , but definitely one of the coolest camaros ever made. good luck with the project.

Re: Just picked up a 1982 Z28 Camaro

I guess you have a couple of options when restoring

The indy's were about 6,360 made, so good find there. You can either work on a like new, factory style restore. The problem is you currently have a 350, which would have been an after market change. If you wanted to take it to original resto then you would need to find the original style 305...problem with that is low power given the displacement. I was thinking about doing an INDY replica with my 83 but not worth it for me.

Do some searches for some of the Indy editions, I think they look really good with the Indy vinyls and windshield decals.

If you want to resto to an indy, I think that's a good path to follow. If your just looking for a great sports car to hang on to, do whatever you want, if the latter is the case.....the 350 was a good switch

Re: Just picked up a 1982 Z28 Camaro

I agree, these cars came with around the h.o. 305 around 190 horsepower. If youre looking for power youll need to stay with the 350 and build it. For cool the original 305 is all you need, but you can do small internal work to the 305 and get a bit more power out of it and nobody has to know. The only problem with the pace cars is that all the parts, i.e. seat covers, graphics and so on cost about double what regular z parts cost. So it also comes down to how much you wanna spend. Personally I would love to see these cars come back up in desireability. The pace car would be a great way to restore the car.

I never considered our cars worth restoring. Turn it into the car you want, not the slow car that came from the factory

Wait a couple years. The early special edition cars will come into being collectible I think. The Pace car here would probably be too much work/money to get into original condition though.

Re: Just picked up a 1982 Z28 Camaro

Well honestly, getting anything to original condition is hard enough...and many guys go better! Sure there's alot of work to do. Are you going for a quick turn around just something fun to drive around?

If I know most 3rd gener's you'll have them the rest of you life. That's a while to work through the paces of restoring. Given the condition this guy bought this car to take it at least close to it's former glory. Your gonna need new seats, wouldn't cost to much more to have it upholstered. It HAS to have body work and a paint job, why not color match. This is a great oppurtunity I mean 6000 out of over 150000 camaro's made that year? Somebody is going to want that later on in a somewhat original state, even if it's only me. Honestly if I was closer to MN I would almost swap mine for it just for the opportunity.

I completely agree that anybody should make their car what they want it to be , but if you think third gen's arent worth restoring ya need to do a bit more home work. The price on these cars have jumped signifigantly in the last couple years. It's nothing to see a clean iroc go for 10,000.
