Bouncing Door

Whenever I'm on a rough road or hit a bump, my door bounces up and down. Before it's said, it's not the hinges or bushings. I had a 91 rs with a severe case of worn hinges/bushings. These are fine. I did a search and only found a couple threads on the subject. One said to adjust the striker, if I remember correctly the striker really isn't adjustable.(maybe I'm wrong) The other thread talked about buying an alignment tool and one guy even used a jack and 2x4 to fix the problem.

Does anyone know of a simple fix on this or maybe even some insight on the jack+2x4 trick? I got a feeling this could go horribly wrong pretty easy.

Re: Bouncing Door

Open the door about 12" and then lift it up and down a few times. If the door moves up and down without the car moving up and down with it, then you need to replace the bushings. Next, see if there is any wear on your striker. If there is, replace it with a new one.

My drivers door used to bounce on rough roads too until I changed the bushings and striker.

Yeah man it's not the bushings. I've done this.

Re: Bouncing Door

First your window, now this! A #40 or 45 Torx socket Will loosen the striker, if its not already loose. As mentioned it is adjustable.Another thing to check is your door latch. If its broken or worn, this could also cause the door to "bounce".

Re: Bouncing Door

lol man I have a whole list of problems and I'm just asking for help as I come to the ones that I'm lost on. My car has been ragged and I'm trying to bring it back.

Now to the striker, I don't see how it could be adjustable unless you consider screwing it in/out adjusting, and I was thinking up and down. I took it off earlier, looked at it and put it back on.

One thing I've noticed is there's no rubber around the latch. The passenger side is the same way but it doesn't bounce. I don't know, the striker seems like a logical cause if I could just move it up slightly.

Re: Bouncing Door

The hole the striker passes thru is larger than the striker, but not by much.It can be adjusted a little, but if its isnt tight it will move. There should be like two thick washers & i think one very thin shim.

Its either the striker or the latch, or something worse!

Re: Bouncing Door

lol what's the worse?

It may just be the latch, I don't know. I havn't notice the door having any problems opening or closing, just bouncing when the car is jarred.

Re: Bouncing Door

Perhaps the rest of the car is bouncing around the door. Seriously though, if both the striker, and hinges are good, the only thing left to do is gut the doors and check the actual latch components. I've never personally seen that portion of the door break on an F-Body, but there is not telling what is doing it after being beat on and tossed around for 20+ years.

Re: Bouncing Door

If the door is bouncing, I'd think you'd see evidence on the striker. I covered my striker. Check post #17 of the following link:

Re: Bouncing Door

Yeah. I was expecting you say bent frame. As far as I know tho the car has never been wrecked. As far back as I can remember a guy down the road from me had the car and I never seen any damage.

Yeah it could very well be the latch.

I actually went through that thread and did everything you mentioned. I've got the back seat striker on. I figure that might help but I havn't gotten to drive the car since. Radiator is screwed for the time being.

Also, there were marks on the striker, but nothing bad. I've seen alot worse.
